Clipdrop is still a quick, capable way to cut out backgrounds, remove objects and text, upscale and relight photos, with a free allowance of 20 uses a day on the core tools and a Pro plan that lifts each to 1,000 and adds text-to-image, uncrop and background replacement.
The risk is direction rather than quality. Under Jasper the API has no public price, the API pricing page is a contact form, and the blog has gone quiet. Fine for ad-hoc edits; not a platform to build a product on without talking to Jasper first.
What we found
Clipdrop is a browser toolkit for everyday image edits: background removal and replacement, cleanup of unwanted objects and text, upscaling, relighting, uncrop and text-to-image. It began at InitML, a Paris startup set up in 2020 by Cyril Diagne, Jonathan Blanchet and Damien Henry that went through Y Combinator's Winter 2021 batch. Stability AI bought InitML in early 2023, announced in March, and Clipdrop's own FAQ says it was sold on to Jasper, the marketing-AI company, in February 2024. The header now reads "Clipdrop by jasper", although the footer copyright still names InitML.
The consumer site is still sold and still works the way it did. The free plan gives 20 uses every 24 hours on background removal, 2x upscaling, cleanup and relight, and 50 on text removal; text-to-image, uncrop and background replacement are struck out on the free column and need Pro. Pro raises every tool to 1,000 uses a day, skips the queue, outputs at high resolution and upscales up to 16x. From Singapore the Pro price rendered as SGD 22 a month, with a free trial whose length the page left blank. No annual option was shown, and no US-dollar price was visible from here. Clipdrop's FAQ says its terms do not limit commercial use of generated images.
The developer side is where Jasper's ownership shows. The API pricing page now redirects to a contact form stating that Clipdrop is part of Jasper and inviting developers to request credits or switch to Jasper's API, and the homepage promotes the Jasper API for embedding image models. Anyone building on the Clipdrop API should expect to deal with Jasper sales rather than a self-serve price list.
There are signs of maintenance mode: the blog lists nothing newer than the Stability-era tool launches, and the terms and legal-notice pages rendered no text when read. For quick cut-outs, cleanups and relighting it remains convenient; teams that need a roadmap or a published API price should look at Jasper directly or elsewhere.
