Note: ChatGPT Atlas is being retired 9 August 2026, with its functionality folded into the ChatGPT desktop app.
Atlas is being shut down. OpenAI announced on 9 July 2026 that the standalone browser stops working on 9 August 2026, less than a year after its October 2025 launch. The concept — ChatGPT with full page context plus an Agent Mode that clicks through sites for you — drew fast enterprise adoption, but security researchers demonstrated prompt-injection attacks within days, and OpenAI itself conceded the problem may never be fully solved for browser agents. The promised Windows version never shipped. The agentic features live on inside the merged ChatGPT desktop app, which absorbs Codex and adds a built-in agent browser, and in the ChatGPT browser extension. Don't adopt Atlas now; existing users should migrate to the ChatGPT desktop app before the August cutoff. This entry remains for the record until the shutdown completes.
What people say
Atlas didn't make it to its first birthday. OpenAI announced on 9 July 2026 that the standalone browser will stop working on 9 August 2026, roughly ten months after its October 2025 debut. The agentic features move into the merged ChatGPT desktop app — which also absorbs Codex and gains a built-in browser for agents — and some of Atlas's best tricks carry over to the ChatGPT browser extension for whatever browser you already use.
The short life had two defining storylines. Security first: within days of launch, researchers demonstrated prompt-injection attacks where a few words planted in a Google Doc could redirect the browser's AI, and a malformed-URL flaw leaked information about previously visited sites. By December 2025 OpenAI conceded that prompt injection is unlikely to ever be fully solved for browser agents — an unusual admission that framed enterprise coverage from then on.
Adoption was the counter-story. Cyberhaven measured Atlas on 1.7% of corporate macOS devices, with 27.7% of organisations having at least one user — rapid uptake for a macOS-only product that never shipped its long-promised Windows version. Users liked the Ask ChatGPT sidebar and full-page-context answers; Agent Mode drew steady complaints about slow runs and tasks stopping short of completion.
The practical guidance is simple: don't adopt Atlas now, and if you're on it, migrate to the ChatGPT desktop app before the August cutoff — OpenAI is notifying users in-app and by email. As an experiment it validated the demand OpenAI's unified app now inherits. As a browser, it's a footnote.
