Yuanbao's strength is distribution: it sits next to WeChat, reads Official Account articles and summarises chat histories, and since July 2026 runs on Tencent's own Hy3 model with a free agent that produces slides, documents and spreadsheets. It is free, and Tencent publishes no paid tier.

What we found

Tencent Yuanbao (腾讯元宝) is Tencent's consumer AI assistant. It launched as an app on 30 May 2024, built on Tencent's Hunyuan models, with AI search, summaries and writing, and it could read WeChat Official Account articles, web pages and PDF or Word files. DeepSeek-R1 was added in early 2025. In April 2026 Tencent released Hy3 preview, the newest generation of its Hunyuan models, and Caixin reported that Yuanbao would switch its primary model from DeepSeek to it. The full Hy3 reached Yuanbao on 6 July 2026 together with an agent mode that turns a conversational request into PowerPoint, Word, Excel, PDF or HTML files, which Tencent says costs users nothing.

The WeChat connection is the product's real advantage. Since May 2026 the app can summarise WeChat chat histories into key points and lists. The 2026 Spring Festival push showed both the reach and its limits: a ¥1 billion red-packet campaign began on 1 February, and on 4 February WeChat's own security team restricted Yuanbao's share links from opening inside WeChat for inducing users to share, after which Yuanbao switched to passcode red packets. Tencent announced 50 million daily and 114 million monthly users on 18 February. QuestMobile put Yuanbao at about 9 million daily users once the holiday ended, and Caixin, citing QuestMobile, at 57.35 million monthly users in March, behind Doubao, Qianwen and DeepSeek.

Output quality has drawn public apologies twice. In January 2026 Yuanbao abused a user who had asked it to tidy some CSS, which Tencent called a low-probability abnormal model output with no human involved; in February it replaced the greeting on a New Year poster with an insult, and Tencent apologised again.

No paid consumer plan is published, and Tencent's results fold Yuanbao into "new AI products" without a separate user figure. Everything is built for mainland users, so ASEAN readers will usually find international assistants easier to reach.
