AIVA is an approachable way to get original instrumental music quickly, and its MIDI export and editor make it useful to musicians as well as non-musicians. Read the licence carefully: only Pro transfers copyright and allows full monetisation, Standard covers social video only, and prices are in euros with VAT added. Output can sound template-bound, and there are no vocals or developer API. Good value for creators and indie developers needing clearly licensed background music; not a substitute for a bespoke composer.
What we found
AIVA, short for Artificial Intelligence Virtual Artist, is an AI music composition tool that generates original instrumental tracks for video, games, podcasts and other content. Users pick from more than 250 styles, or create their own style models, set parameters such as mood and length, and can upload an audio or MIDI file as an influence for AIVA to compose around. Generated tracks can then be edited in AIVA's built-in editor and downloaded as MP3 or MIDI files, so musicians can rework individual parts in their own software. It runs in the browser and as a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux. AIVA does not produce vocals; in April 2025 it announced Lyra, an instrumental model with text prompts and pieces up to 10 minutes long, as a private beta, and we could not confirm that it has reached the product.
AIVA Technologies SARL, based in Luxembourg, was founded in 2016 by Pierre Barreau, its chief executive, Denis Shtefan and Vincent Barreau. It announced a €650,000 funding round in 2017 and later received a €50,000 grant from the EU's Horizon 2020 programme.
Licensing is the key difference between plans, and prices are in euros plus VAT. The Free plan allows three downloads a month of tracks up to three minutes, for non-commercial use with credit to AIVA, which keeps the copyright. Standard, at €15 a month or €11 billed yearly, allows 15 downloads of tracks up to five minutes and monetisation only on YouTube, Twitch, TikTok and Instagram, with AIVA still owning the copyright. Pro, at €49 a month or €33 billed yearly, gives 300 downloads, WAV and all other formats, full monetisation and ownership of the copyright. Businesses with three or more employees and more than $300,000 in revenue must ask for a custom plan.
AIVA has no public developer API. It suits creators and indie game developers who need affordable, clearly licensed instrumental music; anyone wanting songs with vocals should look elsewhere.
