How to make a card
Choose a source
One of the 36 stratagems, or one of the 39 key lines from the thirteen chapters — 75 cards in all.
Set the language
The card follows the page. Choose 繁體 and it is set in traditional characters; there is no separate card-language control to get out of step.
Pick a style
Ink on rice paper, or ink on night. Both are legible; the dark one carries better on most feeds.

The image is drawn at 1080x1080 in your own browser and never uploaded. On a phone, Share hands it straight to an app.
What is on the card, and what is not
A stratagem card carries the four characters, the romanisation, the literal sense and a one-line gist. A key-line card carries the classical line and its translation, with the chapter it belongs to. Neither reproduces a full text: the Art of War runs to about six thousand characters and we publish it by chapter, not by card.
The Chinese on the card is set in a self-hosted subset of Noto Sans SC, licensed under the SIL Open Font License. It is loaded only at the moment you export, never in the page itself — and it was checked character by character against every card this tool can produce, because an image export cannot fall back to your system font the way a web page can.

There are 75 possible cards: the 36 stratagems, plus 39 key lines drawn from the thirteen chapters.
The 36 Stratagems and the Art of War are two different books, roughly a thousand years apart — a card from one is not a quotation from the other.
Every stratagem belongs to exactly one of six sets of six — winning, enemy, attack, chaos, proximate, desperate — and the card shows which.
The card is rasterised in your browser. Nothing you choose is uploaded, logged, or sent to any service.
Chinese on the card is set in a self-hosted subset of Noto Sans SC (SIL Open Font License), loaded only at the moment of export.
A JPEG export cannot fall back to your system font the way a web page can, which is why the font is bundled rather than assumed.

The thirteen chapters run to roughly six thousand characters in the original — the key lines are the sentences those chapters are remembered by.
Text size on the card is chosen by character width, not character count: a Han character occupies about twice the width of a Latin one.
One stratagem, 借尸还魂, is linked to no chapter at all — it has no honest home in the treatise, and the Strategy Map says so rather than inventing one.
Questions
- The classical texts are long out of copyright and the font is under the SIL Open Font License, which permits embedding in documents and images. Our translations and layout are ours — for ordinary sharing, go ahead; for resale of the cards themselves, ask first.
- Because a web page can borrow a Chinese font from your operating system and an image export cannot — the rasteriser only sees fonts the page itself loaded. That is the whole reason this tool bundles a subset, and why the failure hides on a Mac, where the system font quietly rescues it.
- Yes. Switch the page language with the pills at the top and the card follows, including the switch to traditional characters under 繁體. There is deliberately no separate card-language control — two language settings on one screen is a way to produce a card in a language you did not intend.
- Three lines per chapter, chosen as the sentences each chapter is actually remembered by. Publishing the full text as cards would be republishing the book one image at a time, which is not what a card is for — the chapter pages carry the surrounding argument, and each card links back to its own.
- No. The source data is fetched once as a static file, and everything after that — which card, which language, which style, and the image itself — happens in your browser. There is no request that carries your choice.
- Every card links to its own page, which carries the origin story, the explanation and the modern application. The Strategy Map shows how the thirty-six and the thirteen relate, and the Counter-Stratagem Finder works the other direction — from what someone is doing to what it is called.
- 1080 by 1080 pixels, square, whatever screen you are on. The card is drawn at that size and scaled down to fit your column, so a phone and a desktop produce the identical file rather than an image the width of whatever column happened to be rendering it.
- It appears only where the browser can genuinely hand a file to another app, which in practice means most phones and few desktops. A Share button that quietly downloads instead is worse than no button, so it stays hidden — use Download card.
- No. All five language slices are authored and stored, and nothing is translated at the moment you press a button — there is no model call anywhere in this tool. The English key lines follow Giles' 1910 public-domain translation; the Malay and Indonesian renderings are our own.
- Not at the moment, and there is a reason beyond effort: the Chinese font shipped with the export covers the characters these 75 cards use, checked one by one. Free text could reach a character outside it, and the failure would not be visible on screen — only in the exported image, as a blank box.
