Method & sources
How it computes
Q = m c dT for sensible heat, and Fourier's law q = -k dT/dx for steady conduction, from Fourier's Theorie analytique de la chaleur (1822). Specific heat capacities are taken from NIST rather than from a rounded textbook table, because c varies with temperature and the value quoted for water — 4186 J/kg/K — is specifically the value near 25 C.
What this tool implements
- Sensible heat only. A phase change absorbs latent heat at constant temperature, so heating ice through 0 C or water through 100 C is not this calculation and is not silently folded into it.
- Specific heat is temperature-dependent. A single c across a wide range is an approximation, and the reference temperature for the value used is stated rather than implied.
- Fourier conduction assumes steady state and one dimension. Transient warm-up, convection and radiation are separate mechanisms and are not included.
- Units are checked rather than assumed: J/kg/K and kJ/kg/K differ by a factor of a thousand, and mixing them is the usual source of a result that is wrong by exactly 1000.

What can make this go out of date
- None at runtime. Property values ship with the page and carry the temperature at which they apply.
