Method & sources
How it computes
rho = m / V. The familiar 1 g/cm^3 for water is not water at 0 C: density peaks at 3.98 C and falls either side, which is why ice floats and why lakes freeze from the top. Any density figure without its temperature is incomplete.
What this tool implements
- Reference densities carry their temperature. Water at 4 C, 20 C and 25 C are three different numbers, and quoting one unlabelled is the usual source of error.
- Water's anomalous maximum at 3.98 C is stated rather than smoothed over — it is the reason the substance behaves unlike almost every other liquid.
- Gas density depends on pressure as well as temperature and is not comparable to a liquid figure without both.

What can make this go out of date
- None at runtime. Reference densities ship with the page, each carrying its temperature.
