For anyone already paying for Zoom Workplace, the built-in Zoom AI is an easy win: unlimited meeting summaries in 33 languages, including Malay, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese, plus in-meeting questions at no extra cost, and even free users get a small allowance. ZoomMate, the paid successor to Custom AI Companion, is a more ambitious bet on agents, research and workflows across other apps, metered by credits at $16.67 a user a month billed annually; it launched in June 2026 and has little independent track record yet. Summary quality has shifted with past model updates. Switch on the free features; trial ZoomMate before rolling it out.
What we found
Zoom's AI features, sold until June 2026 as AI Companion, now come in two parts. Zoom AI is built into paid Zoom Workplace plans at no extra cost: unlimited meeting summaries, in-meeting questions, custom summary templates, basic AI queries, limited agentic search across Microsoft and Google content, and basic workflows inside Zoom. Meeting summaries work in 33 languages, including Malay, Indonesian, Tagalog, Thai, Vietnamese and Tamil. ZoomMate, launched on 1 June 2026 in English and built on the earlier Custom AI Companion add-on, is the paid agentic layer: a custom agent builder with third-party connections, pre-built agents, web search and deep research, workflows across Zoom and other apps, documents, slides and spreadsheets, unlimited AI note-taking, a voice translator and a memory layer, metered at 2,200 AI credits per user a month. Existing Custom AI Companion customers continue to be supported.
Zoom Communications, incorporated in 2011 and headquartered in San Jose, California, has operations in Singapore, Japan and India and lists Singapore's PDPA among the privacy laws it is subject to.
Even the free Workplace Basic plan includes a limited ZoomMate allowance: summaries for three meetings a month, 20 AI queries, three uses of My Notes, agentic search over a handful of files and meetings, ten workflow runs and three Canvas documents, alongside 40-minute meetings. Workplace Pro costs $14.16 a user a month billed annually, or $16.99 monthly, and Business $18.33 or $21.99. ZoomMate costs $16.67 a user a month billed annually or $20 monthly, as an add-on or a standalone subscription. Enterprise pricing is quoted.
Independent evaluations of ZoomMate are still scarce. Earlier user reports, such as a 2025 Zoom Community thread complaining that summaries had suddenly become much shorter, show that quality can shift with model updates. For teams already paying for Zoom, the built-in features are worth switching on; ZoomMate is worth trialling for teams that want agents working across their other tools.
