Udio still generates some of the most convincing AI vocals and full-band arrangements you can get from a text prompt, and its segmented workflow gives real compositional control. But since the October 2025 UMG settlement it's a streaming-only walled garden: downloads, stems and external distribution are disabled on every tier, so nothing you make leaves the platform. Credit allowances are decent — 2,400 a month at $10, 6,000 at $30 — and a licensed relaunch plus the Starstruck fan-remix app are promised for 2026, with Sony's lawsuit still unresolved. Worth a subscription if you want to sketch songs and share them on-platform; a non-starter if you need files for release, sync or client work until downloads come back.

When the Universal settlement landed on October 29, 2025, downloads of audio, video and stems were switched off across every tier, and subscribers had two days to pull their back catalogue before the walled garden closed. Warner settled on November 19, Merlin and Kobalt followed in early 2026, and Sony remains the holdout — its case against Udio (and Suno) is still active, with a fair-use ruling expected in summer 2026.
That timeline now defines the product, because generation quality was never the problem. Reviewers from Tom's Guide onward rated Udio at or near the top for audio fidelity and vocal realism, its segment-by-segment workflow gives more compositional control than Suno's one-shot prompting, and "BBL Drizzy" — the King Willonius parody Metro Boomin later sampled — remains the first AI-generated track to receive a commercial sample clearance. Credits were bumped after the settlements (2,400 a month on the $10 Standard plan, 6,000 on the $30 Pro), but everything you make stays on the platform: no exports, no stems, no Spotify or YouTube distribution. Reddit and Udio's own forum treat the shutdown as a bait-and-switch on paying subscribers, and AP reported a wave of cancellations.
The next act is Starstruck, the UMG-backed licensed app detailed in April–May 2026, with four modes — Cover, Reimagine, Remix, Create — built around opt-in artist catalogues. It's aimed at fan remixing, not freeform songwriting. Udio says downloads return once the fully licensed platform ships later in 2026; as of July 2026, they haven't.
