Smol Developer
Junior-engineer AI for spec-to-code
Overview
Smol Developer is an early open-source project from Swyx — give it a spec, it scaffolds a working repo. The pattern of 'write a spec, the AI builds the rest' influenced many subsequent tools. Open-source MIT.

Smol Developer is an influential open-source project that demonstrated the 'one prompt to a whole codebase' idea: describe an app and the agent scaffolds the files and code. As an early, deliberately tiny ('smol') agent it was important for showing what LLM-driven code generation could do and remains a useful reference and learning resource.
It suits developers and tinkerers who want to study agentic coding patterns or quickly scaffold a prototype, not teams needing a maintained product. Honest caveats: it is essentially a research/demo repo rather than a polished tool, has limited ongoing development, and has been superseded by far more capable coding agents and IDEs (Cursor, Claude Code, Aider, Devin-style tools). It is free and open-source, runs anywhere, and as a GitHub project carries no SEA-specific limitation, but you bring your own model API key and there is no support.
