Galaxy AI gives Samsung owners a strong set of everyday tools — call translation, an interpreter mode, writing help and photo editing — and Samsung has now said in writing that its basic features stay free. The more ambitious agent abilities come from partners: Gemini can act in more than 40 apps on the newest foldables, and Perplexity powers Bixby on the S26. Availability depends on region, device and a Samsung Account, and reviews of the S26's AI have been mixed. A good reason to use the features you already have; not on its own a reason to choose Galaxy over Pixel or iPhone.

Galaxy AI is Samsung's set of AI features for its phones, tablets, watches and earbuds, introduced with the Galaxy S24 in January 2024 and available on S24-series phones onward. It includes Live Translate for calls, Interpreter for face-to-face conversations, Writing Assist, Photo Assist and generative photo editing, Now Nudge suggestions, and summaries of notes and transcripts, and several features need a Samsung Account. Samsung builds some features itself and relies on partners for others. On the Galaxy S26, launched in February 2026, users can choose agents including Google's Gemini and Perplexity alongside Bixby, and Perplexity says it powers Bixby's search and reasoning. On the Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and Flip8, launched in July 2026, Google says Gemini can carry out tasks in more than 40 popular apps in selected countries for users aged 18 and over; those phones come with a six-month free trial of Google AI Pro. Samsung says the S26 Ultra has the mobile industry's first built-in privacy display.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., based in Suwon, South Korea, settled the question of whether Galaxy AI would stay free in January 2026: its Galaxy AI page says the basic features Samsung provides are free, while future enhanced features or new services may be paid. No paid tier has been announced. Third-party AI such as Gemini and Perplexity follows its own terms, and Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month after the trial.
Availability varies by region and device, and older phones get fewer features. Reviews of the S26's AI have been mixed; Android Faithful called the experience bloated and disjointed.
For Galaxy owners it adds useful translation and editing tools at no extra cost; the most capable agent features come from Google rather than Samsung.
