The r1 has had an unusual life: panned at launch, steadily improved by software updates, and now an optional terminal for rabbit OS3, a cloud agent system that also works from the web and messaging apps. Its maker has stopped producing it, retired the rabbit intern agent and says there will be no R2, and reports in 2025 described the company as financially strained. The rabbit r1 is a small orange AI gadget, co-designed with Teenage Engineering, that launched in 2024 as a pocket assistant you talk to instead of using apps. It has a 2.88-inch touchscreen, a rotating camera, a push-to-talk button, a MediaTek Helio P35 processor, 4 GB of memory, 128 GB of storage, 4G LTE and a 1,000 mAh battery, and weighs 115 g. Early reviews were harsh: Engadget called it a $199 AI toy that fails at almost everything, and Marques Brownlee's "barely reviewable" video has more than nine million views. Software updates have since changed it a great deal: rabbitOS 2 in September 2025 brought a card interface and user-built "creations", 2.2 in June 2026 added Claude Code, a terminal mode and image generation, and 2.3 in July added a new agent and bring-your-own-key model access. Android Police later wrote that the critics had been right but were now wrong.
In September 2026 rabbit launched OS3, an agent system that runs in the cloud, can be reached through the web, Telegram, messaging apps or the r1, and can control up to five connected devices. OS3 is free, but its agent features run on your own API key, paid to whichever model provider you choose. The earlier rabbit intern agent is no longer sold as a standalone product. In a Wired interview reported by TechSpot, chief executive Jesse Lyu said rabbit has stopped manufacturing the r1, is selling it while supplies last and has no plans for an R2; its next device is a "cyberdeck" for coding. Lyu also said rabbit has raised about $60 million, employs 15 people and has sold more than 100,000 r1s. Tom's Guide reported in November 2025 that staff had gone unpaid; Lyu says the company is healthy.
