Its one-click Sky AI replacement and portrait tools were genuinely novel in 2021; that work has since moved into Luminar Neo, which remains in active development and shipped a Fall 2025 update with photo restoration and relighting tools. Nobody should seek out Luminar AI today. If Skylum's approach appeals, buy Neo — this listing exists for the photographers who still run an old license.

If you own a license you can still log into your Skylum account, re-download the installer and keep editing, but you're running unsupported software that will eventually break on new hardware.
It deserves its footnote in the AI-editing story, though. When it launched in December 2020, Sky AI was a genuine trick: detect the sky in an outdoor shot, swap it for a dramatic replacement, and relight the foreground to match, in seconds instead of half an hour of Photoshop masking. Face AI, Body AI and the template-driven workflow followed the same pitch — results without technique — and it worked both standalone and as a Photoshop/Lightroom plugin.
All of that development effort moved to Luminar Neo, which shipped in 2022 and is still on an active release cadence: the Fall 2025 update added one-click photo restoration and a Light Depth relighting tool, and Skylum has also been reshuffling how Neo is sold, winding down new subscriptions in favour of other licensing. Neo is simply the same idea, maintained.
So the buying advice writes itself. Nobody should seek out Luminar AI in 2026 — you can't buy it from Skylum anyway, and anything sold secondhand is a support dead end. Existing owners can carry on until an OS update breaks it. Everyone else who likes Skylum's automate-the-boring-parts approach should price up Neo, or stick with Lightroom.
