Inkitt is a Berlin fiction platform that picks what to publish by watching how people read. Ali Albazaz, who still runs it, and Linda Gavin opened it to the public in February 2015. Anyone can post a story free and anyone can read free; Inkitt tracks how readers move through each one and moves the strongest performers into Galatea, its paid reading app. Inkitt's homepage claims that one in two novels its readers discover become bestsellers; that is the company's figure, with no published method behind it.
The model has grown well beyond books. Galatea stories are adapted into short drama series for the CandyJar app, action shows run on Inkitt Ironblood, audio goes to Audiobooks Plus, and a Movie Creator, in beta, offers to turn a script into an AI-generated film. In February 2024 TechCrunch reported a $37 million Series C led by Vinod Khosla, taking total funding to $117 million, partly to fund AI-written and personalised fiction.
The author side is where to slow down. An April 2025 Bloomberg feature by Vauhini Vara described Inkitt rewriting chapters against reader data and continuing one author's series through platform ghostwriters working with AI, and reported a 6% royalty on Galatea revenue against about 25% at traditional publishers. A separate Author Subscriptions programme lets writers sell exclusive content to fans and keep all of that subscription income. Read any publishing contract in full before signing it.
For readers, Galatea is free to start, then sells points that skip wait times between chapters, from $3.99 to $24.99, or a $69.99 yearly subscription, on Apple's US App Store. Its terms were updated on 29 September 2026; subscriptions renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before expiry, and store purchases follow the store's refund rules. Galatea rates 4.6 from 299,376 ratings there, read 14 October 2026. Everything is English-first, with no ASEAN-specific catalogue.
