Qodo PR-Agent (the open-source repo formerly under CodiumAI, now qodo-ai) is one of the better free AI PR review tools: /review, /describe, /improve and /ask commands generate summaries, code suggestions and security/test-coverage feedback across GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps. It is model-agnostic and self-hostable, so you bring your own OpenAI/Anthropic/etc. key and control where code goes — a real plus for privacy-conscious teams.
It suits developers comfortable wiring up a CLI/Action and paying for LLM tokens directly; it is not a polished SaaS out of the box (that is the paid Qodo Merge tier). Output quality tracks the model you point it at. For ASEAN teams the self-host option helps, but there is no localisation. Excellent value for the technically inclined.

PR-Agent has been through several identity changes worth knowing before adopting it. Its creator, Codium AI, rebranded to Qodo in late 2024; the commercial hosted product built on PR-Agent became Qodo Merge; and the open-source license shifted from Apache 2.0 to AGPL and then back to Apache 2.0. Most significantly, in 2025–2026 Qodo handed the open-source PR-Agent project to a community-owned GitHub organization (The-PR-Agent) with an independent external maintainer, so the free self-hosted tool and Qodo's paid offering are now formally separate tracks. The tool itself is very much alive — Qodo reported serving over 500,000 developers as of mid-2026, with enterprise customers including Dell, Nvidia and Deloitte.
What users consistently praise is the workflow: comment a slash-command like /review or /describe on a pull request and get a summary, review comments, and concrete code-improvement suggestions within minutes. Reviewers describe the suggestions as context-aware rather than surface-level linting, and one published three-week test across 23 pull requests found it surfaced genuine issues — including null-reference and async race-condition bugs human reviewers missed — in 17 of them. Being self-hostable with your own API key, across GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket, is a repeated selling point.
The complaints are consistent too. It can struggle on large or architecturally complex PRs, sometimes producing generic or noisy suggestions that need manual triage, and the split between what the open-source tool does versus what requires paid Qodo Merge (multi-repo context, analytics, SSO, SOC 2 posture) confuses first-time evaluators. The naming churn has not helped.
PR-Agent fits teams that want automated first-pass PR review without vendor lock-in — especially those comfortable self-hosting. Teams wanting managed infrastructure and enterprise controls are effectively being steered toward paid Qodo Merge, at a published price around $19 per user per month.
