Overview
CodeGeeX is a free AI coding plugin from Zhipu AI for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, offering completion, comment generation, code translation and chat, with private deployments for companies. It grew out of a 2022 Tsinghua University code model; the plugin has not been updated since December 2025, and Zhipu now pushes the GLM Coding Plan instead.

CodeGeeX is still free for individuals and still works: completion, comments, code translation, chat and, since September 2025, a basic agent in VS Code and JetBrains. Its open CodeGeeX4-ALL-9B model was strong for its size in 2024, by Zhipu's own benchmarks.
But the plugin has not been updated since December 2025, its open weights are for academic use unless registered, and Zhipu's current coding models now go into the paid GLM Coding Plan. Fine for students who want free completion in Chinese; teams should look elsewhere, including at Zhipu's own Coding Plan.
What we found
CodeGeeX began as research: a 13-billion-parameter multilingual code model from Tsinghua University's Knowledge Engineering Group, trained on more than 850 billion tokens on Huawei Ascend 910 chips by June 2022 and released with a VS Code extension that September. Zhipu AI (智谱), which trades internationally as Z.ai and listed in Hong Kong as Knowledge Atlas Technology in January 2026, took it to market. CodeGeeX2 followed in July 2023, and CodeGeeX4-ALL-9B, built on GLM-4-9B, in July 2024.
The plugin offers code completion, comment generation, translation between programming languages and in-IDE Q&A for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, and the site also lists Visual Studio, HBuilderX and Android Studio. Its FAQ says the plugin is completely free for individual users. Companies can buy a private deployment, including an appliance that bundles hardware, operating system and model for China's domestic-technology (信创) programmes, priced by quote.
The open question is maintenance. On 14 October 2026 the VS Code Marketplace showed version 2.27.6, last updated on 1 September 2025, with about 1.37 million installs. The JetBrains plugin gained GLM-4.5 support in July 2025 and an agent that September, and its latest build, dated 11 December 2025, only extended compatibility to newer IDEs. Earlier versions of this page said that December release added agent features and that there was no agent at all; both were wrong. Since then nothing has shipped, while Zhipu's coding effort has moved to the paid GLM Coding Plan and its ZCode IDE.
CodeGeeX4-ALL-9B is on GitHub and Hugging Face, and Zhipu reports a HumanEval score of 82.3, but the weights are licensed for academic research and commercial use needs registration. A 9B model is well behind current coding agents. CodeGeeX remains a free, Chinese-first completion plugin; anyone after Zhipu's current coding models should look at the GLM Coding Plan instead.
