Deep Research is the most consequential agent mode ChatGPT ships: point it at a genuinely open-ended question and it will spend anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes autonomously browsing, reading, and cross-checking dozens of sources before handing back a structured, cited report — a task that would eat a real afternoon done by hand. Since February 2026 it runs on a GPT-5.2-based model, up from the original specialized o3 build, and OpenAI keeps expanding paid-tier quotas as it tries to hold ground against Gemini and Claude's research modes.
The honest caveat: this is still a hallucination-prone tool wearing a research coat. G2's own review data flags "Inaccuracy" as the single most common complaint about ChatGPT, with over 100 mentions, and independent hallucination studies put citation-error rates in research contexts well into double digits. Read every citation before you cite it yourself — Deep Research is a strong first-draft generator, not a fact-checked deliverable.
What people say
ChatGPT's G2 reviews put "Inaccuracy" at the top of the negative-tag list with 107 mentions, followed by "Unreliable Information" at 68 — and a separate G2 poll found 75% of professional users say they've personally hit a hallucination, with more than half saying it's happened more than once. None of that is unique to Deep Research, but the mode inherits the same underlying model, applied to a task — synthesizing dozens of external sources into one authoritative-sounding document — where a confidently wrong citation is easy to miss and expensive to repeat downstream.
The scale of the problem varies wildly by domain and study. One measurement put citation hallucination rates in general research use between 18% and 55%, and dramatically worse — 58% to 88% — on legal queries specifically, a strong argument against pointing Deep Research at anything with real compliance stakes without a human lawyer checking every cite. A separate literature-review-focused study found roughly 91% of ChatGPT responses contained at least some fabricated or misleading detail. Andrew Rogoyski at the University of Surrey, writing in The Guardian, warned that the real risk isn't the errors themselves but users adopting Deep Research's output verbatim without going back to check it — the report format looks authoritative enough to discourage that verification step.
On the product side, capability keeps expanding. Deep Research moved onto a GPT-5.2-based model in February 2026, replacing the original specialized o3 variant, and OpenAI has restructured pricing around it: the $20/month Plus plan gets 10 Deep Research sessions a month, a new $100/month Pro tier introduced in April 2026 delivers roughly 5x that quota for heavier professional use, and the long-standing $200/month Pro tier adds a still-larger monthly allowance. Once you exhaust your quota on any tier, further requests silently downgrade to a lighter, faster version of the mode rather than blocking you outright.
Bottom line from the review data: genuinely useful for compressing multi-source synthesis work, genuinely risky if you skip the verification pass — and the two ChatGPT tiers both named "Pro" ($100 and $200) is a real point of confusion worth checking carefully before you subscribe.
