How it computes
U = mgh near Earth's surface. g is not a constant of nature: it runs from about 9.780 m/s^2 at the equator to 9.832 at the poles, and standard gravity is a DEFINED value, 9.80665 m/s^2, fixed by the 3rd CGPM in 1901 for the purpose of standardising units — not a measurement of anywhere in particular.
What this tool implements
- Standard gravity 9.80665 m/s^2 is used and identified as a defined convention rather than a local measurement.
- U = mgh holds only where g is effectively uniform. Over heights comparable to Earth's radius the correct form is the gravitational potential, not mgh.
- Potential energy is defined relative to a chosen zero. The height datum must be stated or the number means nothing.

What can make this go out of date
- None at runtime. Standard gravity is a defined constant and cannot go stale.
