Vietnam and China use the same lunisolar calendar, so Tết and Chinese New Year usually fall on the same day. But they sometimes land a day apart, and in 1985 they were separated by a full month: Vietnam celebrated on 21 January, China on 20 February. The usual explanation for the one-day gaps does not work for the 1985 divergence.
Two countries, one calendar, different clocks
Vietnam and China run the same lunisolar calendar. Months begin at the instant of new moon, and a thirteenth month is inserted every few years to keep the months in step with the seasons. The arithmetic is identical.
What differs is the meridian. Vietnam computes its calendar on UTC+7 and China on UTC+8, a legal basis Vietnam set by decision in 1967, effective from the start of 1968. An astronomical instant is the same everywhere, but the calendar date you write on it depends on your clock, and an hour of difference occasionally moves an instant across midnight.
The usual explanation, and why it is wrong for 1985
The standard account is that a new moon sometimes falls close to midnight, so it lands on one date in Hanoi and the next date in Beijing, and the month — and therefore the new year — begins a day apart in the two countries. This is correct, and it accounts for the one-day differences seen in 1968, 1969, 2007, and next in 2030.
It does not explain 1985, and reaching for it there gives you a confidently wrong answer. Checking every new moon from September 1984 to March 1985 across both time zones, not one of them changes date. They are identical in Hanoi and Beijing: 24 October, 23 November, 22 December, 21 January, 20 February. Whatever separated the two calendars that year, it was not a new moon crossing midnight.
What actually moved was the solstice
The leap month is not inserted arbitrarily. Its position depends on which lunar month contains the winter solstice, because that month is defined as the eleventh. Everything else is numbered from there.
In December 1984 the solstice fell late on the 21st in Hanoi and just after midnight on the 22nd in Beijing — under an hour apart, on opposite sides of midnight. So the two calendars disagreed about which month was the eleventh. In Beijing the solstice landed in the month beginning 22 December, making that the eleventh. In Hanoi it landed in the month beginning 23 November, making that the eleventh.
With the eleventh month defined differently, the two calendars were counting from different starting points. The result was a month's divergence, not a day's. China's records show the direct consequence. Its 1984 calendar carries a leap tenth month, with the month beginning on 24 October and again on 23 November. Vietnam did not insert its extra month at that point, and took it later instead.
The same new moon, two different month numbers
A single date shows the effect clearly. The new moon of 21 January 1985 opened Vietnam's first month — Tết. In the Chinese calendar, the very same new moon opened the twelfth month, with the first month not arriving until 20 February.
One conjunction, visible from both countries at the same moment, numbered as the start of two different months. That is the whole of it.
How often this happens
One-day differences, like those in 1968, 1969, 2007, and 2030, are the common case and arise from this new-moon mechanism. They are not rare and they are not a sign of anything having gone wrong — both calendars are computed correctly, on their own meridians, and a difference is the expected outcome when an instant falls near midnight.
A one-month difference needs the solstice itself to land within about an hour of midnight, which is a much narrower target. It has happened once in the modern era of the Vietnamese calendar. There is no cycle to it, and claims that divergences recur on a fixed period are worth ignoring — the pattern is set by where particular astronomical instants fall relative to two clocks, which is irregular by construction.
A distinction worth keeping straight
Vietnam's civil clock and Vietnam's calendar basis are two different histories, and they are routinely merged.
The clock in the north had been running an hour behind Beijing since the 1950s. The 1967 decision was about something else: which meridian the calendar would be computed on. Sources that describe the country as having switched time zones in 1967 are conflating the two, and the distinction matters here because it is the calendar basis — not the wall clock — that produces the divergences.
Where this comes from, and what will date
The Chinese dates and the 1984 leap month are read from the Hong Kong Observatory's published conversion tables, which also back our lunar / solar date converter, which cover 1901 to 2100 as free plain text. The new-moon and solstice instants were computed from standard published algorithms and compared across both meridians.
One note on precision. The solstice margin is under an hour, and our own computation of the exact minute is approximate at that resolution, so the guide says under an hour rather than quoting a figure to the minute. The direction is not in doubt — the solstice is on the 21st in Hanoi and the 22nd in Beijing — and that is what the argument rests on.
The historical dates are fixed. Future dates are computed, and the observatory warns that those decades out can shift by a day as the underlying values are refined. Treat 2030 and beyond as expected, not settled.
