Wordtune is AI21 Labs' sentence-rewriting, summarising and grammar assistant, launched in 2020 as a Chrome extension. Calcalist reported that AI21 halted its development in April 2025 as the company shrank to its Maestro agent platform. The service is still online and still sells Advanced and Unlimited subscriptions.

Wordtune's rewrite suggestions remain useful, especially for non-native English writers adjusting tone and length, and the free tier is enough to judge them. But Calcalist reported that AI21 stopped developing the product in April 2025, and in May 2026 the company cut 110 of 180 staff to concentrate on Maestro. The Chrome extension still gets updates, but the blog stopped in 2024 and the Teams plan is no longer sold.
Billing is the real caution. Most recent one-star Trustpilot reviews describe charges after cancelling, the trial needs a card and the FAQ says there are no refunds. Fine if you already use it; if you start, pay monthly and note the renewal date.
What we found
Wordtune is the writing assistant AI21 Labs launched in October 2020, when the Tel Aviv company came out of stealth with a free Chrome extension that offered several rewrites of any sentence a user highlighted. It later added summaries of documents and YouTube videos, tone switching, grammar checks and an AI writer. AI21 Labs Ltd is still the contracting party in the Wordtune terms, last updated on 15 October 2025.
The product has outlived its parent's interest in it. Calcalist reported that AI21 halted Wordtune's development in April 2025, calling it the first visible sign of the company's retrenchment; we found no AI21 statement about the product. On 18 May 2026 AI21 told Globes it was laying off 110 of its 180 staff, would stop selling its language models and would concentrate on Maestro, its agent-optimisation platform. Calcalist reported that much of the engineering team would move to Nebius; Nebius called that false and said it had licensed AI21's technology.
Wordtune is still sold. The plans page, read on 14 October 2026, lists a free Basic tier with 10 rewrites a day and 3 summaries a month, Advanced at $13.99 a month or $6.99 a month billed annually, and Unlimited at $19.99 or $9.99 billed annually. Paid plans start with a 3-day trial that takes a card, and the FAQ says there are no refunds. The Chrome extension was updated on 19 April 2026, so it is not frozen, but the blog has not posted since mid-2024 and the Teams plan is gone.
Users split sharply. Trustpilot showed 4.1 from 582 reviews when read on 14 October 2026, with recent five-star reviews praising the rewrite options for academic and work writing. Yet 17 of the 20 newest one-star reviews describe unwanted renewals, charges after cancelling or refused refunds, and reviews from September and October 2026 report the iOS AI writing feature failing. The Chrome Web Store showed 3.3 from about 2,400 ratings, against the 4.7 the homepage still claims.
