Typhoon is the default starting point for Thai-language AI: open models tuned for Thai text, OCR that reads Thai documents, and speech recognition that handles Isan as well as central Thai. By the team's own count it was downloaded 6 million times from Hugging Face in 2025.
Do not plan production on its API. The paid tier ended with 2025, the promised AWS replacement had still not appeared by October 2026, and the free API is an unsupported beta. Self-host the weights for anything that has to stay up.
What we found
Typhoon is Thailand's best-known family of open Thai-language AI models. It began at SCB 10X, part of the Siam Commercial Bank group, with a first paper in December 2023, and its website, API terms and privacy notice now all name SCB DataX Co., Ltd., another SCBX Group company. Alongside text models it covers optical character recognition for Thai documents, Thai and Isan speech recognition, Thai-English translation and research previews in medical and legal reasoning.
The traction figures come from the team itself. Its 2025 review reports Hugging Face downloads rising from 330,000 to 6 million and the free API serving 14 million calls and about 320 million tokens, and on that basis calls Typhoon the most downloaded open-source Thai-optimised model suite. That is plausible but self-reported. The best-documented outside use is a June 2025 pilot with Thailand's Office of the Public Sector Development Commission, a chatbot answering officials' questions about the Public Sector Excellence Awards.
The production story is weaker. The paid Typhoon API Pro, hosted by Together AI, ran from March to the end of 2025, and the review promised a next-generation production environment on AWS in the first quarter of 2026. As of October 2026 the documentation still lists the AWS option as coming soon and still advertises the ended Together tier. What remains is a free API, which the FAQ describes as a research showcase provided as-is, in beta and without formal support, with two text models capped at 200 requests a minute plus OCR and speech endpoints.
New work in 2026 has been almost entirely speech recognition, released under MIT, Apache 2.0 or Creative Commons licences; the newest general text model is still Typhoon 2.5 from October 2025. For Thai-language prototypes and research, Typhoon is the obvious place to start. For a production service, plan to self-host the open weights, because the hosted API comes with no warranty and no formal support behind it.
