Tempo has reinvented itself, from a visual React editor into a desktop "software factory" that ties AI agents to issues, a live canvas and visual review, a coherent idea for product teams. The pivot means older reviews describe a different product, and the new app is young. Pricing is simple and the free plan is usable. Worth trying for product and design-heavy teams; developers happy in their editor may not need another layer.
What we found
Tempo began as a web-based visual editor that generated React apps from prompts, and has since become a desktop app that calls itself an AI software factory for product teams. In mid-2026 the company wound down its web editor, saying its own engineers kept returning to tools like Cursor, and moved everything to a local app for macOS, Windows and Linux that works on a team's own git repositories. It brings together product docs, a kanban of issues, a Canvas where every frame is a live route or React component whose edits Tempo writes back to the source files, chat sessions that each run in an isolated git worktree, and background agents triggered from Slack, schedules, GitHub events or assigned issues. A visual review step compares storyboards pixel by pixel on every pull request until a person approves. Users can plug in Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode, or use Tempo's own inference at break-even API prices; a free GPT-5.4-mini option trails the paid models, the company says.
Tempo was founded in Toronto in 2023 by Kevin Michael, formerly an engineer on Microsoft's Visual Studio team, and Peter Gokhshteyn, a former Google, Bloomberg and Zynga developer, and went through Y Combinator's summer 2023 batch. It raised a $5 million seed round in October 2025 from YC, Golden Ventures, BoxGroup, General Catalyst and others. Releases ship frequently.
The free plan includes 250 issues, 100 docs, 500 local tests a month and seven days of history. Pro costs $50 a month for one user plus $40 for each additional user, with unlimited issues and docs and 5,000 tests; Team costs $200 a month for five users with 35,000 tests and a year of history; Enterprise adds bring-your-own infrastructure and audit history. Separately, Agent+ is a custom service and Hire a Human starts at $500 a month; a customer testimonial on Tempo's site credits it with halving front-end costs.
