Joule is becoming part of the SAP furniture: from the third quarter of 2026 most of its generative features are included in every SAP cloud subscription, and the paid layer is now agents billed per action. That is simpler and cheaper than the per-user Premium packages SAP is retiring, though the price of an AI Unit is still negotiated and SAP's own executives admit Joule Studio adoption has been slow. The planned roster of 200-plus agents is still arriving. For SAP cloud customers, switch on the included features now and pilot agents on a measured budget; it is irrelevant to anyone outside SAP.

Joule is SAP's AI assistant and agent platform across its cloud applications, from finance and HR to supply chain and procurement. Announced in September 2023, it now comes in layers. Joule Base helps users navigate SAP software, find information and get in-context guidance; Joule Assistants and Joule Agents carry out work in specific business domains, coordinated across systems through the MCP and A2A protocols; and Joule Studio lets companies build their own agents by describing outcomes in plain language, with low-code or pro-code tools and frameworks such as LangChain and LlamaIndex. At Sapphire in May 2026 SAP said its suite would deploy more than 50 domain-specific Joule Assistants orchestrating over 200 specialised agents, introduced Joule Work for desktop, mobile and voice, and said Anthropic's Claude would be one of the foundation models behind Joule agents in HR, procurement and supply chain. CIO.com named Ericsson, Mercado Libre and Siemens as customers running Joule agents in production, and SAP executives told the same reporter, who attended as SAP's guest, that Joule Studio adoption had been minimal.
SAP SE, founded in 1972 and based in Walldorf, Germany, is reworking how it charges. Most generative features that used to consume AI Units are moving into Base AI, included in every SAP cloud subscription at no extra cost, from the third quarter of 2026, and the per-user Joule Premium packages are being retired. Premium AI now centres on agents, billed in AI Units bought annually: each action by an SAP-delivered agent costs 0.02 units, unused units expire after 12 months and excess use is billed per use. Joule for Consultants is a per-user offer at 35 units a month. Custom-built agents are free to design and free to run in production until the end of 2026. SAP does not publish the price of an AI Unit; it is negotiated.
Joule is available only to SAP cloud customers, who should switch on Base AI and model agent actions before buying units.
