SAP Joule's real edge is depth, not breadth: it's grounded directly in a company's live S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, and Ariba data, which a bolt-on assistant can't match for organizations already running their business on SAP. Joule Studio 2.0's pitch — describe an agent in plain language and get a deployable spec, workflow, and eval suite — is a genuine leap over the original Joule Studio, which SAP's own product leadership admitted saw "minimal" adoption and struggled with anything beyond simple, content-based tasks.
Licensing is the catch: Joule Base is bundled free with SAP Cloud subscriptions, but Premium features run on AI Units bought in blocks of 100+, priced per-contract rather than published, so real cost depends entirely on negotiation. There's essentially zero value outside an existing SAP estate. Fits large SAP shops consolidating AI spend, not a standalone AI purchase for anyone else.
What people say
SAP itself has been unusually candid about Joule Studio's first act. At Sapphire 2026, the company's chief product officer for Business Suite said "Joule Studio adoption has been minimal compared to what we'd like," and its chief AI officer added that the original low-code approach let customers "give it extension points and tools, but you couldn't touch the core of it" — a direct admission that the builder couldn't handle anything past simple, content-based agents. Customers reportedly came in with big automation plans but needed approval gates and hard rules the original tool didn't support.
Joule Studio 2.0, announced at that same event, is SAP's fix: pro-code tooling, agent governance, and — in the flagship demo — a single natural-language prompt generating a full deployable multi-agent implementation, specs and eval suite included. SAP cites 200+ agents already live at reference customers including KPMG and Ericsson, alongside a broader library of 40+ pre-built Joule Agents and 2,400+ Joule Skills across 35 SAP solutions.
On the day-to-day copilot side, G2 reviewers describe Joule as easy to use and genuinely time-saving for routine SAP tasks — natural-language queries instead of navigating transaction codes — but flag that it struggles with complex, multi-step queries and often needs custom configuration to fit a specific business process, echoing the same "fine for simple, weak for complex" pattern SAP acknowledged at the platform level.
Pricing stays opaque by design. Joule Base ships free with SAP Cloud subscriptions; Joule Premium runs on AI Units purchased annually in blocks of 100 minimum, with per-unit pricing negotiated per contract rather than published — SAP's own pricing page won't tell you what it costs, and per-action overage on top of allotted FUE actions runs $0.08 to $0.18 each. For any SAP customer evaluating this, budget planning means going through an account executive, not a price list.
