Notion AI is the AI layer of the Notion workspace: Notion Agent for drafting and editing pages and databases, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search across connected apps, Research mode and database Autofill. It is included in Notion's Business and Enterprise plans, with a limited trial on Free and Plus, while scheduled Custom Agents run on separately purchased Notion credits.

Notion AI's value is context: the agent, search and meeting notes work over the pages and databases a team already keeps in Notion, plus connected tools like Slack and Google Drive, with no copy-paste. Custom Agents extend that into scheduled automation, and the October 2026 release opened Notion to outside agents through MCP and let ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscribers use that plan inside Notion.
The cost is the catch. Full AI requires the Business plan at $20 per member a month billed yearly, and Custom Agents are metered separately at $10 per 1,000 credits, pausing when credits run out. Worth it for teams that run on Notion; hard to justify for a solo user who only wants a writing assistant.
What we found
Notion AI is the AI layer of Notion, the documents-and-databases workspace made by Notion Labs, Inc. in San Francisco. It went generally available in February 2023 as a $10-per-member add-on that could sit on any plan. That arrangement is gone. Notion's pricing page now includes Notion AI only in Business ($20 per member a month billed yearly, $24 billed monthly) and Enterprise (custom pricing). Free and Plus workspaces get a limited trial of the agent and meeting notes, nothing more.
What Business buys is Notion Agent, which writes and edits pages and databases using context from the workspace, connected apps and the web; AI Meeting Notes, which transcribes without a bot joining the call; Enterprise Search across tools such as Slack, Google Drive and GitHub; a Research mode for longer reports; and database Autofill. Notion describes the plan as carrying a usage allowance rather than unlimited use.
Custom Agents, launched on 24 February 2026, are the part that costs extra. They run on triggers or schedules, answering repeat questions in Slack, routing tasks or compiling status updates, and they consume Notion credits at $10 per 1,000 a month, bought by admins as an add-on. When credits run out the agents pause until the next reset or a top-up, and admins are alerted at 80% and 100% of usage. Workers, which run custom code for agents, are free to try while in beta.
The pace of change is high. Notion 3.7 in September 2026 added a shared skills library, and Notion 3.8 on 13 October 2026 added MCP connections to more than 150 tools, a Skills API, and the option to cover Notion AI usage with an existing ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription. On privacy, Notion says its AI subprocessors may not train on customer data; non-Enterprise workspaces carry 30-day retention at the model providers, and Enterprise gets zero retention and HIPAA support.
