In 2026 it moved to incitefulmed.com/academic/ and now sits beside Inciteful Med, a paid patient-facing service from the same company, Inciteful, Inc.; the academic tool itself still shows no price. What we found
Inciteful began when its developer, credited in the app's own citation line as M. Weishuhn, was helping a family member with academic research, kept chasing references and citations through Google Scholar, and noticed that the notes amounted to a network graph. The tool built to draw that graph automatically is still free. You need no account, and it takes a paper title, DOI, PubMed URL or arXiv link as a starting point.
Paper Discovery builds a citation network around one or more seed papers. It ranks related work by similarity, using co-citation and bibliographic coupling, and by importance, using PageRank, and it shows the authors, institutions and journals that dominate that part of the network. The Literature Connector takes two papers and shows how the literature links them. Results can be exported to Zotero, and seed lists can be imported from a BibTeX file. A beta page offers experimental options, such as pruning hugely cited papers that drag every graph towards them.
The data comes from open sources: OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, Crossref and OpenCitations. That keeps the tool free, but it also means the graph favours well-cited work, and a paper published last month can barely register because nothing cites it yet.
The address has changed. Since spring 2026, inciteful.xyz redirects to incitefulmed.com/academic/, where the tool sits beside Inciteful Med, a patient-facing medical research service from the same US company, Inciteful, Inc., with a free tier and paid plans at $10 or $30 a month. The academic tool shows no price, and its about page still says charging would feel like "bad karma" because it is built on free data. Earlier versions of this page described a one-developer project in New York.
Librarians still recommend it: HKUST's library has a guide to it, and the Spring 2026 issue of Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship reviews it. Use it to map a field before a literature review, not as a reference manager, and do not build an institutional workflow on a free service with no service commitment.
