iManage is the governed foundation most large law firms already file into, and its AI makes sense on that footing: Ask iManage gives cited answers across the whole repository within existing permissions and ethical walls, and MCP, ChatGPT Enterprise, Gemini and CoCounsel connections let other AI tools draw on the same content without exporting it.
It is enterprise software throughout: quote-only pricing, partner-led implementation, and AI available only on iManage Cloud. The right choice for regulated firms at scale; overkill for small practices.
What we found
iManage is the document and email management system most large law firms build on. The product line dates to 1995, when Neil Araujo and Rafiq Mohammadi started the team in Chicago; it passed through Interwoven, Autonomy and HP before a 2015 management buyout made iManage independent again, and Bain Capital Tech Opportunities took a minority stake in 2023. The company says more than a million professionals at about 4,000 organisations use it, including 81% of the AmLaw 200, and that 78% of customers were on iManage Cloud by May 2026.
The AI sits on top of that governed repository rather than beside it. AI Enrichment classifies documents and extracts data, Mailbox Assistant helps file email, and Ask iManage, introduced in 2024, answers natural-language questions with citations back to the firm's own documents. A January 2026 update widened Ask iManage from user-selected document sets to the whole repository, with summaries, side-by-side comparison, redline analysis and playbook review against a firm's standard positions. Insight+ enriches content with matter and business context and now exposes it to outside agents through a Model Context Protocol server.
Much of 2026 was about connecting that store to other people's AI. iManage announced an expanded Thomson Reuters partnership bringing CoCounsel Legal into the platform in August, launched on Google's Gemini Enterprise for Legal days later, and added a ChatGPT Enterprise plugin in September, each keeping ethical walls and permissions intact. A next-generation platform built on what iManage calls its Context Fabric was due for general availability in October 2026.
All of it is quote-based and sold through demos and partners; no price is published, and Ask iManage is a paid subscription available only on iManage's cloud. Implementation is a project, not a signup. For mid-size and large firms, corporate legal teams and advisory practices that need matter-centric filing and defensible governance, it is the reference choice. Small firms will find it heavy.
