Honeycomb Canvas is the AI investigation workspace in the Honeycomb observability platform and the successor to Query Assistant, Honeycomb's 2023 natural-language query tool. It turns plain-English questions into editable queries and visualisations, follows team skills and connectors, and can run investigations automatically when alerts fire. It is included on every Honeycomb plan, including Free.

Query Assistant did one job, turning a plain-English question into a Honeycomb query. Canvas does that and keeps going: it runs the queries, reads traces, explains results and, since the May 2026 rebuild, can start an investigation on its own when an alert fires, following runbooks the team writes as skills. Every query it generates stays visible and editable, so engineers can check its work.
It comes with every Honeycomb plan, free included, so there is no AI surcharge to weigh. The real cost is adopting Honeycomb and instrumenting services to send enough telemetry. A strong reason to use Honeycomb's AI if you are on Honeycomb; not on its own a reason to switch vendors.
What we found
Honeycomb Canvas is the AI investigation workspace in Honeycomb, the observability platform run by Hound Technology, Inc. of San Francisco, and it is where Query Assistant ended up. Query Assistant arrived in May 2023 as a narrow tool: type something like "slow endpoints by status code" and it produced a Honeycomb query to refine in the Query Builder. Honeycomb's documentation no longer has a Query Assistant page, and the old docs address now redirects to the general query-building guide. Its job, turning plain English into queries, is done inside Canvas.
Canvas belongs to Honeycomb Intelligence, the AI suite Honeycomb announced in September 2025, alongside a hosted MCP server for AI coding tools, contextual chat about the page being viewed, AI help writing calculated fields and an early-access anomaly detector. In Canvas you ask a question in plain English and it runs the queries, analyses traces and lays out visualisations in a notebook where each generated query can be inspected and edited. Teams can add skills, written runbooks the agent follows, and connectors that let it pull context from PagerDuty, incident.io, Notion, Linear and others.
At its Innovation Week in May 2026 Honeycomb said it had rebuilt Canvas from the ground up and introduced Canvas Agent, which can start an investigation automatically when a trigger fires or an SLO burns, plus Agent Timeline for following what an AI agent did in production.
The AI is not sold separately. Honeycomb's pricing page lists the Canvas AI copilot, the MCP server and Agent Timeline on the free plan, which covers up to 20 million events a month. Pro starts at $150 a month for 50 million events and scales to 750 million; Enterprise starts at 10 billion events a year on negotiated terms. Team owners can switch Honeycomb Intelligence off, and Honeycomb says it does not train foundation models on customer telemetry. None of it helps until services are instrumented and sending data.
