Google Translate is still the default free translator, and for Southeast Asia it has no real rival in breadth: almost 250 languages, including Khmer, Lao, Javanese, Cebuano and Malay in Jawi script. Its Gemini 3.5 Live translate turns any headphones into a near-real-time interpreter, though Google notes voices can drift in long conversations. The richer Gemini text features are still limited to about 20 languages in the US and India. For polished European business prose some users prefer DeepL, which now also covers most ASEAN national languages. Free for everyday use; businesses needing volume should budget for the Cloud Translation API.

Google Translate, launched in 2006, translates text, documents, websites, speech, handwriting and camera images across almost 250 languages, and Google says more than a billion people use it each month. It runs on the web, in Android and iOS apps and inside Chrome, with offline language packs and a conversation mode. Since June 2026 its Live translate feature has used Gemini 3.5: it detects more than 70 languages and translates speech a few seconds behind the speaker through any headphones, keeping the speaker's intonation and pacing, and watermarks its audio with SynthID. Google itself warns that voices can drift in long or multi-speaker sessions and that strong accents can confuse detection. Gemini also powers richer text translation, with alternative phrasings and follow-up questions, but only between English and nearly 20 languages, starting in the US and India; a pronunciation practice mode began there too.
Its regional coverage is unusually broad. Beyond Indonesian, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese, Filipino, Burmese, Khmer, Lao and Tamil, it handles Javanese, Sundanese, Cebuano, Balinese, several Batak languages, Malay in Jawi script, Tetum and Shan, and English to Indonesian is among its most translated pairs. DeepL now covers most of the region's national languages too, but not Khmer or Lao.
The consumer product is free. Developers and businesses pay through Google Cloud Translation, a separate service: the first 500,000 characters a month are free, then neural translation costs $20 per million characters, documents $0.08 a page, the Translation LLM $10 per million input and output characters each, and custom models from $80 per million characters, falling with volume.
Google publishes no benchmark scores for its newest translation models, so have a fluent speaker check anything important. For everyday use across Southeast Asian languages, it remains the default.
