DeepL remains one of the best choices for professional translation, especially for documents where layout, glossaries and consistent terminology matter, and its language coverage now reaches well into Southeast Asia. Its quality claims are largely self-published, features vary sharply by language, and public reviews are dominated by billing and cancellation complaints. DeepL is a machine-translation service from Cologne that translates text, documents and websites in more than 100 languages through its web translator, desktop and mobile apps, browser extensions and an API. Paid plans add whole-document translation with formatting kept, glossaries, style rules, translation memory and full-page translation, and DeepL Write rewrites and polishes text. DeepL Voice translates live conversations and meetings and, since September 2026, can keep the speaker's own voice, and DeepL is now reachable inside Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT and Claude. Its Southeast Asian coverage is broader than it once was: Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Malay, Tagalog and Burmese are supported, though only Indonesian gets glossaries and Malay, Tagalog and Burmese get basic translation only; Khmer and Lao are absent. Its quality is well regarded, though the comparisons it publishes are its own.
DeepL SE was founded in Cologne in 2017 and is led by Jaroslaw Kutylowski. It raised $300 million at a $2 billion valuation in May 2024, led by Index Ventures, has more than 1,000 employees and says over 200,000 business teams use it; Bloomberg reported in 2025 that it was exploring a US listing. In Japan, Miyazaki Prefecture uses DeepL Voice, and DeepL supported multilingual information after the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake.
The free translator allows 50,000 characters a month and one small file. Individual costs $8.74 a month billed yearly or $10.49 monthly, with 300,000 characters, three files and no training on your data; Team, the most popular, $28.74 per user with a million characters and administration; Business $57.49 per user with effectively unlimited characters, translation memory and Write Pro; and Enterprise is custom. Write Pro is otherwise an add-on at $7.49. The API offers a free Developer plan with a one-time million-character credit, and Growth at $26 a month billed yearly plus $27.50 per extra million characters.
