Codebuff is an open-source, terminal-first coding agent with a TypeScript SDK for building your own agents. It suits developers who live in the command line and want parallel sub-agents and an automatic review pass on every change.
It is now the premium product of Freebuff, Inc.: pay 1¢ a credit or subscribe at $100, $200 or $500 a month, while the company's Freebuff agent covers the free end. Treat its speed claims against Claude Code as vendor benchmarks. ASEAN users should note that Freebuff gives the region limited access only, which leaves paid Codebuff as the full route.

Codebuff is a coding agent that runs in your terminal. Install it from npm, describe a change in plain English, and it maps the repository, picks the relevant files, edits them, runs your type checker and tests, and has a reviewer agent check the result before handing back. It came out of Y Combinator's Fall 2024 batch, launched on Hacker News that November, and sits on an open-source Apache-2.0 codebase with a TypeScript SDK for building custom agents. Co-founder James Grugett previously started Manifold Markets.
The ground has shifted underneath it. The company now trades as Freebuff, Inc.: its terms of service cover Codebuff alongside the Freebuff products, its Y Combinator listing is titled Freebuff, and the CodebuffAI/codebuff repository on GitHub now redirects to CodebuffAI/freebuff. Freebuff is the team's ad-supported agent, introduced in early 2026, and it now has paid tiers from $8 a month as well. Codebuff is still sold and maintained; its npm package was last published on 8 September 2026.
Codebuff is the premium option. There is no free plan: you pay one cent a credit as you go, or subscribe to the Strong plan at $100, $200 or $500 a month for one, 2.5 or seven times the usage, cancellable at any time. Modes are Default, Max, Plan and Lite. Max runs several editor agents in parallel, each trying a different strategy, and keeps the best result.
Read the speed claims with care. The homepage promises output more than 100 seconds faster than Claude Code, but that figure comes from BuffBench, Codebuff's own evaluation, not an outside test. ASEAN readers face a further catch: Freebuff's source code shows Singapore lost full free access on 15 September 2026, so the free route now gives the region limited access only. Codebuff suits terminal-first developers who will review an agent's diffs and watch their credit spend.
