Cline
Open-source autonomous coding agent for VS Code with step-by-step approval
Overview
Cline is an MIT-licensed autonomous coding agent that runs as a sidebar in VS Code (plus JetBrains, Cursor, Windsurf, Zed, Neovim and a preview CLI). It reads your codebase, creates and edits files, runs terminal commands, drives a real browser via Puppeteer and integrates external tools through the Model Context Protocol, asking for approval at each step. It connects to 30+ providers with your own API key and has over 5 million installs.

ASEAN Perspective
Cline in Southeast Asia
ASEAN-region availability and pricing notes coming soon. Drop the editorial team a note via /contact/ if you can supply local context (Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia/Thailand/Vietnam).
Cline is the upstream project Roo Code forked from, and with Roo Code now archived it's the recommended migration path and the most mature open-source agent in the space. The approval-per-step model balances autonomy with safety, MCP support makes it extensible, and broad IDE coverage plus BYOK keeps you in control of cost and data.
It's a lightweight extension rather than a full editor fork, so you keep your existing VS Code setup. Output quality and spend track the model you choose, so expect some tuning — but for most developers it's a top-tier, no-lock-in pick.
