Zhuyin / Bopomofo: Taiwan-Standard Chinese Phonetics

Zhuyin Fuhao (ㄅㄆㄇㄈ, formally "Mandarin Phonetic Symbols I") is a Chinese phonetic system released in 1918 by the Republic of China. After 1958, mainland China switched to Pinyin, but Taiwan + parts of HK still retain Zhuyin. It uses 37 unique symbols (21 initials + 16 finals + 4 tone marks), entirely independent of the Latin alphabet.

Zhuyin vs Pinyin

(1) Pinyin uses Latin letters (bā = ㄅㄚ); Zhuyin uses independent symbols. (2) Pinyin enables international input + learning; Zhuyin preserves Chinese\'s "pictographic" lineage. (3) 90%+ of mainland China uses Pinyin; 90%+ of Taiwan uses Zhuyin — one of the biggest cross-strait educational differences.

This tool\'s uses

(1) Taiwan students learning Hanzi. (2) Cross-strait communication (converting pinyin → zhuyin for Taiwan readers). (3) Input method switching: Taiwan uses Zhuyin IME, tool simplifies copy/paste. (4) Linguistics: comparing the two phonetic systems.

10 Facts about Zhuyin Bopomofo

01

Zhuyin was released in 1918 — 40 years before Pinyin (1958). The first national-level Chinese phonetic system.

02

The 37 zhuyin symbols derive from Hanzi radicals or archaic characters — ㄅ from 勹, ㄆ from 攵. A native Chinese linguistic innovation.

03

ㄅㄆㄇㄈ are the 4 entry-level Zhuyin symbols — like "ABC" for English. Taiwan kids start Chinese learning here.

04

Taiwan literacy stages: master all Zhuyin by age 6 → use Zhuyin-assisted Hanzi reading → transition to pure-Hanzi reading at 7-9.

05

70%+ of Taiwan uses Zhuyin IME (type zhuyin → select candidates). A core feature of Taiwanese computing.

06

HK education is primarily in Cantonese; some Mandarin schools still teach Zhuyin. Singapore + Malaysia generally use Pinyin.

07

Zhuyin ㄦ ("erhua" / r-coloring) is mainly Northern Mandarin — Southern dialects (Cantonese, Min, Hakka) rarely use it.

08

Zhuyin can spell almost all Mandarin syllables, but cannot spell some dialect sounds (e.g. Wu 侬, certain Min sounds).

09

Before 1949, Zhuyin was mainland China's official phonetic system. Pinyin replaced it in 1958. Older mainland Chinese can still read Zhuyin.
