Why the Cheaper Pack Is So Hard to Spot

Standing in an aisle holding two jars, the question is trivially simple and almost impossible to answer: which one is better value? The shelf gives you two prices and two pack sizes, and the sizes are never round multiples of each other. A 480 g jar at $5.20 against a 750 g jar at $7.90 is not a calculation most people can do accurately while a trolley waits behind them, and the packaging is designed with that in mind.

Reducing everything to a common amount fixes it. Per 100 grams, the 480 g jar is $1.08 and the 750 g jar is $1.05 — closer than it looked, and the bigger pack wins by a margin small enough that whether you will finish it matters more than the price. That is a genuinely different conclusion from "obviously buy the big one", and it is the sort of conclusion that only appears once the arithmetic is done.

The multi-buy trap

Multi-buy labels are where hand arithmetic most often goes wrong, and they are everywhere in this region: 2 for $5, 3 botol RM10, beli 2 percuma 1. The mistake is natural — you see two numbers and multiply the wrong one. "2 for $9" on 400 g jars does not mean $9 for 400 g, and it does not mean $18 either. It means $9 is buying you 800 g, which is $1.125 per 100 g. Enter it as price 9, size 400, packs 2 and the tool handles it; the packs field multiplies the quantity you receive, never the price you pay.

Where this tool stops, deliberately

Put a 500 g jar and a 500 ml bottle side by side and most comparators will happily rank them. They can only do that by assuming a density — nearly always water, one gram per millilitre — and that assumption is buried where you cannot see it. For water it is correct. For cooking oil, at about 0.92 g/ml, it is 8% out. For honey, at roughly 1.42, it is out by more than 40%. Those errors dwarf the price differences the tool is supposed to be detecting, so the answer it produces is not merely imprecise, it is actively misleading.

So this one refuses. Mix weight and volume and you get each item's own unit price, plus a plain explanation that no honest ranking exists without knowing what the product actually is. Count is treated the same way: eggs and batteries are priced per item, and a dozen eggs is not convertible into 500 g of anything. A refusal is a worse experience than a number, and a better answer than a wrong one.

Small things that turn out to matter

The conversion factors are exact definitions rather than the rounded ones in common use. A pound is precisely 453.59237 grams and an ounce precisely 28.349523125 grams; a US fluid ounce is 29.5735295625 ml, while the imperial fluid ounce is 28.4130625 ml. That last pair is worth watching, because a 4% difference between two things both called a "fluid ounce" is larger than most genuine price gaps.
