How Taiwan labor & health insurance and the labor pension work (2024)

Enter your monthly salary (NT$)

Type your monthly salary. The calculator clamps it to the labor-insurance insured-salary range (NT$27,470–45,800) and the NHI insured-amount range (NT$27,470–219,500) as the premium base.

Enter number of dependents

NHI is charged on the insured (本人); each dependent adds one further insured share, capped at 3. More dependents directly increase your NHI deduction.

Choose your voluntary pension rate

Under the new labor-pension scheme the employer contributes 6% of the monthly contribution wage (a benefit, not a deduction). You may voluntarily add 0–6%, which IS deducted from your pay.

Read your monthly deductions and take-home

The result shows the employee monthly total (勞保 + 健保 + voluntary pension), the 勞保 share, the 健保 share, the employer burden (informational) and take-home pay.

How Taiwan labor & health insurance and the labor pension work (2024)

In Taiwan, employees pay into two main social insurances every month: labor insurance (勞保, which bundles employment insurance) and National Health Insurance (健保). A third scheme, the labor pension (勞退新制), is funded mainly by the employer. This calculator estimates the employee's monthly share of all three from a single salary figure, using 2024 rates.

Labor insurance has a 12% ordinary premium rate (11% ordinary-event + 1% employment insurance). The premium is split 20% employee / 70% employer / 10% government, and is charged on the insured salary — your monthly salary clamped to the 2024 range of NT$27,470–45,800. So the employee share is insured salary × 12% × 20%.

National Health Insurance is 5.17% in 2024, with the employed insured paying 30% (the employer 60%, government 10%). NHI is charged per dependent: each dependent (capped at 3) adds another self-share, so the employee share is the insured amount × 5.17% × 30% × (1 + dependents). The NHI insured amount is clamped to NT$27,470–219,500 — a far higher ceiling than labor insurance.

The labor pension (new scheme) is an employer contribution of 6% of the contribution wage into your personal account — shown here separately as a benefit, not a deduction. You may also voluntarily contribute 0–6%, which IS deducted from your pay and added to your account.

Scope: this is a simplified estimate for employed insureds. Real premiums snap your salary to the official insured-salary/amount schedule brackets rather than a simple clamp, and it excludes occupational-accident rates, part-time work, supplementary premiums, the self-employed and occupational-union insured, and income-tax withholding. 10 Facts About Taiwan Labor & Health Insurance

01

This tool uses 2024 rates: labor insurance ordinary-event 11% plus employment insurance 1% = a 12% ordinary premium rate.

02

The labor-insurance ordinary premium is split: the insured (employee) pays 20%, the employer 70%, and the government 10%; this tool computes only the employee's 20%.

03

Labor insurance has an insured-salary schedule — in 2024 a floor of about NT$27,470 and a ceiling of NT$45,800; salaries above the ceiling are charged at the ceiling.

04

National Health Insurance (NHI) is 5.17% in 2024; an employed insured pays 30%, the employer 60% and the government 10%.

05

NHI is charged per dependent — each dependent adds another insured share, capped at 3 — so more dependents raise your own NHI deduction.

06

NHI also has an insured-amount schedule, with a 2024 floor of about NT$27,470 and a ceiling of NT$219,500, far above the labor-insurance ceiling.

07

The labor pension (new scheme) is an employer monthly contribution of 6% of the contribution wage into a personal account — an employer cost and employee benefit, not an employee deduction.

08

Under the new scheme an employee may voluntarily contribute 0–6%, deducted from monthly pay into the personal account, and fully deductible from that year's total individual income.

09

This tool's take-home pay = salary − the employee total (labor 20% + NHI self and dependents + voluntary pension); it excludes income-tax withholding and any other deductions.

10

This is a simplified estimate — actual premiums follow the official insured-salary/amount schedules and exclude occupational-accident rates, part-time work, the self-employed and occupational-union insured.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • They are Taiwan's two main social insurances for employees: labor insurance (勞保, including employment insurance) provides old-age, injury/illness, maternity and unemployment benefits; National Health Insurance (健保) provides medical coverage. Both are charged on insured-salary/amount schedules, with premiums shared between employee and employer.
  • Labor share = insured salary (monthly salary clamped to 27,470–45,800) × 12% × 20%; NHI share = insured amount (salary clamped to 27,470–219,500) × 5.17% × 30% × (1 + dependents, capped at 3); voluntary pension = salary × your voluntary rate (0–6%). Adding the three gives the employee monthly total.
  • Actual premiums use the official insured-salary/amount schedule "brackets," snapping your salary to the nearest scheduled amount, whereas this tool simply clamps to the floor/ceiling. Occupational-accident rates, part-time work, supplementary premiums and income-tax withholding are also excluded — small differences are normal.
  • No. The new-scheme 6% is contributed monthly by your employer into your personal pension account — an employer cost and your benefit, not a payroll deduction. Only your voluntary 0–6% is deducted from your salary.
  • NHI is charged per dependent — each dependent adds another self-premium share, capped at 3. With 2 dependents, for example, your NHI deduction is about triple the single figure (self + 2 dependents).
  • Not necessarily. The insured salary/amount uses a schedule that maps your actual pay to a scheduled bracket; above the ceiling it is charged at the ceiling, below the floor at the floor. This tool clamps to the floor/ceiling as a simplification and does not map bracket by bracket.
  • No. This tool estimates the employee cost-sharing ratios (labor 20%, NHI self 30%). The self-employed, occupational-union members and those without a fixed employer have different ratios — check with bli.gov.tw / nhi.gov.tw separately.
  • No. This tool estimates only the three social-insurance deductions (labor insurance, NHI and voluntary pension); it does not compute income-tax withholding on salary. Use a separate tool for full tax estimates.
  • No. All calculations run entirely in your browser — your salary, number of dependents and voluntary rate are never transmitted to any server or stored anywhere. Closing this page clears all your inputs instantly.
