HK Mahjong Scoring: The Common Scoring System for HK/SG/MY
Hong Kong-style mahjong (also called "Cantonese mahjong" or "Old-style") is the most common form of mahjong among Chinese communities in HK, Singapore, and Malaysia. Rules are relatively simple — 13 tiles, 4 sets + 1 pair — distinct from Taiwan\'s 16-tile, China\'s 88-fan PRC, or Japan\'s Riichi.
The scoring formula
HK mahjong uses: base × 2 ^ min(fan, cap). Base is the per-game stake (usually 10-100 HKD/SGD). Fan is the sum of all special patterns achieved on a winning hand. Cap is the "limit" (usually 10-13 fan). E.g.: base 10, win at 7 fan → final score = 10 × 2^7 = 1,280.
Common patterns
1 fan: Concealed (门清), Self-draw (自摸), Seat-wind triplet (自风刻), Flowers (花牌, 1 fan each, 2 if matching seat), Dragon triplets (中/发/白, 1 fan each). 3 fan: All Triplets (对对和), Half-flush (混一色), Mixed Straight (花龙). 5-8 fan: Small Three Dragons (小三元), Terminals + Honours (混幺九), Full Flush (清一色). Limit hands: Thirteen Orphans (十三幺), Big Three Dragons (大三元), Big Four Winds (大四喜), All Honours (字一色), All Green (绿一色).
SG/MY mahjong culture
Singapore\'s "3-missing-1" tea-house mahjong and Malaysia\'s family-style mahjong both use HK rules. Local conventions may add patterns (SG/MY commonly adds "Seven Pairs" (七对子) and "Eight Immortals") — the tool includes Seven Pairs.

10 Facts about Mahjong
Mahjong originated in Qing-dynasty China (~1850). From the 1920s onward it spread to Japan, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America — one of the world's most popular table games.
HK uses 13 tiles, Taiwan uses 16, PRC International uses 13 with 88-fan system, Japanese (Riichi) uses 13 with declarations/yaku. Rules vary dramatically — confirm before cross-regional play.
"Self-draw" (自摸) earns +1 fan — not just a rule but a bonus because drawing your own winning tile (no discards) is much harder.
"Thirteen Orphans" (十三幺) is HK mahjong's rarest limit hand — all 13 terminals/honours + 1 duplicate. Statistically about 1-2 per 10,000 hands.
SG/MY's "3 missing 1" (3 缺 1) is a local mahjong cultural feature — a table needs exactly 4, so "3-missing-1" requests are sent around to friends. A major social glue.
"Women's mahjong" is a 21st-century East Asian phenomenon. Female-only mahjong parlours are growing in Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Singapore's "red-envelope mahjong" (Lunar NY family gatherings) is a similar cultural fixture.
The "fan" (番) of mahjong is called "han" (翻) in Japanese, with similar pronunciation. One of the cross-language terminologies preserved as mahjong went international.
4-of-a-kind (kang) + 1 extra tile = 14 tiles in hand. This is the only HK situation allowing 14 tiles. After "kang", the player draws a replacement tile from the wall.
The math of mahjong: each set has 144 tiles (with flowers); theoretical winning-hand combinations are astronomical. But in real play, most hands cluster around a few common patterns.

Not really. Taiwan uses 16 tiles, a different fan system (called "tai"), and specific flower rules. This tool is for 13-tile HK style, applicable to HK/SG/MY.
Varies by group convention. Family mahjong: base 10-20. Tea-house mahjong: base 50-100. SG/MY workplace mahjong often starts at HK$10/SG$10. The key is to agree before the game starts.
In principle no — a winning hand normally belongs to one base type (Ping Wu OR All Triplets). The tool allows multiple ticks because the sum still computes correctly. In real play, only tick one.
HK standard is 10 fan (cap at 10). Some SG/MY venues use 13 fan (more generous). The tool defaults to 10; adjust via "Fan cap" input.
Throughout the winning hand, you never claimed (pong/kong) any discards from other players. Fully drawn from the wall until completion. +1 fan. If also "self-drawn", add another fan (total +2).
Dragon triplets (中/发/白): +1 fan each. All 3 = "Big Three Dragons" (8 fan, limit hand). Wind triplets: only your seat wind (your position's wind) or the round wind (current round) count = +1 fan. Other wind triplets count 0.
Spring/Summer/Autumn/Winter (4 seasons) + Plum/Orchid/Chrysanthemum/Bamboo (4 flowers) = 8 flowers. Each = +1 fan. Your "seat flower" (e.g. East-seat + Spring) = +2 fan. If you collect all 8 flowers = instant win + limit hand.
An SG/MY house-rule addition. The entire 14-tile hand forms 7 pairs — no runs, no triplets. Hong Kong doesn't universally accept this; SG/MY commonly do = 4 fan.
