How MPF mandatory contributions work
The Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) is how most of Hong Kong's workforce saves for retirement. Under the MPFA-administered scheme, an employee and their employer each contribute 5% of the employee's relevant income, so roughly 10% of pay goes into the employee's MPF account each period.
Two income thresholds shape the mandatory contribution. Below the minimum relevant income of $7,100 a month, the employee is exempt and pays nothing — but the employer must still contribute 5%. Above the maximum relevant income of $30,000 a month, contributions are capped, so each side pays at most $1,500 (5% × $30,000). Between $7,100 and $30,000, both sides simply pay 5%.
Self-employed persons contribute 5% of their own relevant income, subject to the same $7,100 minimum and $30,000 maximum on a monthly basis ($85,200 to $360,000 a year), capped at $1,500 a month. There is no employer side.
Voluntary contributions are extra amounts paid on top of the mandatory 5%. They are not subject to the $30,000 cap and are shown separately here, so you can see the mandatory floor distinctly from any top-up you choose.
Scope: this calculator estimates mandatory (and optional voluntary) contribution amounts only. It does not model MPF fund management fees, investment returns, accrued benefits, or offsetting. The minimum and maximum income levels are reviewed periodically by the MPFA and may change.
10 Facts About the MPF
The Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) is Hong Kong's statutory retirement scheme, regulated by the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA). Most employers, employees and self-employed persons must participate.
The mandatory contribution rate is 5% of relevant income, paid by both the employee and the employer — together about 10% of income.
The minimum monthly relevant income level is $7,100: if income is below this, the employee pays $0, but the employer must still contribute 5%.
The maximum monthly relevant income level is $30,000: contributions are capped here, so each side pays at most $1,500 per month (5% × $30,000).
For employees earning between $7,100 and $30,000, both the employee and the employer contribute 5% of relevant income.
Self-employed persons contribute 5% of relevant income, with a minimum of $7,100/month ($85,200/year), a maximum of $30,000/month ($360,000/year), and a $1,500/month cap.
Voluntary contributions are extra contributions on top of the mandatory amount; they are not capped at $30,000 and can be set by the employee or the self-employed person.
Mandatory contributions are paid into the scheme on the contribution day after the income period; newly employed staff usually have a contribution holiday for the first 30 days.
This calculator covers mandatory contributions only — it does not model MPF fund fees, investment returns, or offsetting.
The minimum and maximum income levels are reviewed periodically by the MPFA and may change; this calculator uses the current (as at 2024) levels — actual figures should follow MPFA announcements and your trustee's calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
- The Mandatory Provident Fund is Hong Kong's statutory retirement savings scheme, regulated by the MPFA. Most employers, employees and self-employed persons must contribute on relevant income — 5% from the employee and 5% from the employer.
- Mandatory contribution = relevant income × 5% from each side. If income is below $7,100/month the employee pays $0 (the employer still pays); if above $30,000 it is computed on $30,000, so each side pays at most $1,500/month.
- You (the employee) are exempt from the mandatory contribution and pay $0, but your employer must still contribute 5% of your income. A self-employed person below the minimum also need not contribute.
- Yes. Monthly relevant income is capped at $30,000, so the mandatory contribution is at most $1,500/month per side; the self-employed annual relevant income cap is $360,000.
- A self-employed person contributes 5% of relevant income, with a $7,100/month minimum and $30,000/month maximum ($85,200–$360,000 a year), capped at $1,500/month, with no employer side.
