How to use
Search by district
Chinese (中環 or 中环) or English (Central) — both scripts match.
Search by place
"Tsim Sha Tsui", "Disneyland", "Airport", "Tung Chung" or "Cyberport" returns the district it is in, and says which place matched.
Search by code
Type a C&SD district letter, A (Central and Western) to T (Islands), with no I or O. A letter returns that district only.
Browse by region
Below the search, all 18 districts are listed in 3 groups — HK Island / Kowloon / New Territories — with mid-2025 population, land area and density.
Hong Kong's 18 administrative districts
Hong Kong is divided into 18 districts: HK Island (4) — Central and Western, Wan Chai, Eastern, Southern; Kowloon (5) — Yau Tsim Mong, Sham Shui Po, Kowloon City, Wong Tai Sin, Kwun Tong; New Territories (9) — Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun, Yuen Long, North, Tai Po, Sai Kung, Sha Tin, Kwai Tsing, Islands. On C&SD's figures the land population at mid-2025 was 7,497,800 on 1,089.71 km² of land (reservoirs excluded). Each district has a District Council, which advises the government on district affairs.
The letter codes
The codes in the table are the letters the Census and Statistics Department uses for District Council districts in its tables: A (Central and Western) to T (Islands), skipping I and O. The 2021 Census constituency-area codes start with the same letter — Chung Wan is A01. We found no two-letter district code in government use, so this tool no longer shows one.
"Kowloon houses 29.9% of Hong Kong's residents on 4.3% of its land; the New Territories house 54.6% on 88.4%."
Computed from the table above. Source: C&SD Table 110-02001, mid-2025.
Population and area
The most populous district is Sha Tin (692,400, 9.2% of the total) and the least populous is Wan Chai (163,000), a 4.25× spread. The densest is Kwun Tong at 59,400 people per km²; the least dense is Islands at 1,090, a 54.5× gap. Islands is the largest by land area (182.28 km², 16.7% of Hong Kong's land).
Where the districts are used
C&SD publishes population, census and household statistics by district; District Council elections are held district by district; and Hongkong Post's address format writes the district by name, before the estate or street. Hong Kong has no postcodes.
Where Hong Kong's people, land and council seats sit
The New Territories' 9 districts cover 88.4% of Hong Kong's land and hold 54.6% of its residents (mid-2025).
Kowloon, not HK Island, is the crowded region: 47,780 people per km² against 14,540 on the Island. The five densest districts are all in Kowloon.
Kwun Tong packs 59,400 people into each km², 54.5 times Islands. Even Kowloon's least dense district has 42,750 per km².
Sha Tin is the most populous district (692,400, 9.2% of the total) — 4.25 times Wan Chai.
Islands is the largest district by land (182.28 km²): Lantau, Cheung Chau, Lamma, Peng Chau and smaller islands, with Hong Kong International Airport and Hong Kong Disneyland inside it.
The 2023 District Council reform cut directly elected seats from 452 of 479 to 88 of 470 (94.4% to 18.7%). From 1 January 2024: 179 appointed, 176 District Committees seats, 88 directly elected, 27 ex officio.
District Boards were set up in each district in 1982 under the District Administration Scheme. After the 1998 review they were renamed District Councils in English; the first District Council term began on 1 January 2000.
Legislative Council elections group the 18 districts into 10 geographical constituencies of two seats each. Islands votes with Central and Western and Southern in Hong Kong Island West; Wong Tai Sin, Sha Tin and Yuen Long are each split between two constituencies.
Hong Kong has no postcodes: Hongkong Post says the "postcode system is not adopted in Hong Kong", and addresses are written by district name, estate or street, building and flat.
C&SD's land area excludes reservoirs and the 0.97 km² Lok Ma Chau Loop, which is inside Hong Kong's boundary but not yet in any District Council district.

How it computes
Reference table of the 18 District Council districts: land population (mid-2025, thousands), land area adopted for density (km2, reservoirs excluded) and density, as published in C&SD Table 110-02001; search and the derived rankings (most and least populous, densest, largest) come from HkDistrictsKernel over the same figures.
What this tool implements
- All 18 districts' population, land area and density checked against C&SD Table 110-02001 for 2025 through its API on 2026-10-19: every figure matches. The page's rankings are computed from the data at render time, not written in prose.
