How China 五险一金 works
Pick your city
Choose Beijing / Shanghai / Guangzhou / Shenzhen and the tool applies that city's typical ~2024 contribution rates and base floor/ceiling. Policies differ by city — if it does not match your locale, pick "Custom" and enter your own figures.
Enter your contribution base (¥/month)
The base usually equals your pre-tax monthly salary, but is clamped between the selected city's floor and ceiling (no clamp in Custom mode). The base is reset each year when the local average wage (社平工资) is published.
Adjust the housing-fund rate (5%–12%)
The housing-fund rate can be set from 5% to 12%; employee and employer normally match, default 12%. The other five insurance rates are preset to the city's typical values — indicative only, the local 社保局 prevails.
Read the estimate
Results show your employee monthly total, the employer monthly total, the per-item employee breakdown (pension / medical / unemployment / housing fund), the combined total and the amount deducted from gross pay. Rates and base floor/ceiling vary by city — this is indicative only.
How China 五险一金 works
In mainland China, "五险一金" bundles five social-insurance items — pension (养老), medical (医疗), unemployment (失业), work-injury (工伤) and maternity (生育) — with one housing fund (住房公积金). Together they are deducted from pay alongside individual income tax, with both employee and employer contributing.
This calculator estimates those contributions by taking your monthly contribution base, clamping it to the selected city's floor and ceiling, and multiplying by each item's rate. Work-injury and maternity are employer-only here, and the housing-fund rate is yours to set between 5% and 12%.
The single most important caveat: rates AND the base floor/ceiling differ by city and are updated every year when the local average wage (社平工资) is published. The Beijing / Shanghai / Guangzhou / Shenzhen presets are typical ~2024 values for orientation, not authoritative figures — pick "Custom" to enter your own.
Typical employee rates are pension 8%, medical ~2%, unemployment ~0.5% and the housing fund at your chosen rate; typical employer rates are pension ~16%, medical ~9.5%, unemployment ~0.5%, plus employer-only work-injury (~0.2%–0.5%, by industry) and maternity (~0.8%, often merged into medical).
Scope: salaried employees on the standard 五险一金 structure. Flexible-employment (self-employed) participants, city-specific merged items, temporary fee-reduction policies and exact base-setting rules are outside this simplified model.
10 Facts About China 五险一金
"五险一金" means five social-insurance items — pension, medical, unemployment, work-injury and maternity — plus one housing fund.
Social insurance is shared between employee and employer, but work-injury and maternity are normally borne entirely by the employer; the employee pays nothing for those.
Contribution rates and the base floor/ceiling vary by city and reset each year when the local average wage (社平工资) is published — the biggest source of uncertainty in any estimate.
The contribution base usually equals pre-tax monthly salary, but is clamped between roughly 60% (floor) and 300% (ceiling) of the local average wage.
Pension is typically 8% (employee) and ~16% (employer) — the largest of the five insurance items.
Medical insurance is typically ~2% (employee) and ~9.5%–10% (employer), with notable city-to-city variation.
Unemployment insurance is typically ~0.5% each for employee and employer, lower in some cities.
The housing fund rate runs 5%–12%, matched by employee and employer; the balance can be drawn for buying or renting a home, or at retirement.
Many cities have merged maternity insurance into medical insurance, so "five insurances" is often computed across four-to-five lines in practice.
This calculator is a simplified planning estimate using typical ~2024 rates and base limits; local policies differ — the local 社保局 and housing-fund centre prevail.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Your contribution base is first clamped between the selected city's floor and ceiling (no clamp in Custom mode). Then "base × each rate" gives the employee and employer amounts for pension, medical, unemployment, work-injury, maternity and the housing fund, which are summed into the employee and employer monthly totals.
- Because both the contribution rates and the base floor/ceiling are set locally and reset each year when the local average wage is published. This tool ships Beijing/Shanghai/Guangzhou/Shenzhen typical ~2024 values for reference only — always defer to your local 社保局's latest rules.
- Usually it equals pre-tax monthly salary, but it is clamped between roughly 60% (floor) and 300% (ceiling) of the local average wage. Below the floor you pay on the floor; above the ceiling you pay on the ceiling. Custom mode applies no clamp.
- The housing-fund rate is 5%–12%, set by the employer within that range, with employee and employer normally matching. This tool defaults to 12% — adjust it to your actual rate.
- Usually not. Work-injury and maternity insurance are normally paid entirely by the employer; the work-injury rate is by industry risk class and maternity varies by city, so these two count toward the employer total only, not the employee total.
- Cities differ in how they set the base, the rates, and whether items are merged (e.g. maternity folded into medical), and the base is reset annually with the average wage. This tool uses typical ~2024 values, so it differs from any single month's actual deduction.
- The housing fund can be drawn for buying or renting a home, at retirement and in other prescribed cases; pension and medical insurance give corresponding benefits when conditions are met. Check the local housing-fund centre and 社保局 for exact withdrawal and benefit rules.
- Rates and base limits can change every year when the local average wage is published, and some cities issue temporary fee-reduction policies. This tool ships typical ~2024 values — verify the latest rules before relying on it.
- Not entirely. Flexible-employment (self-employed) workers usually join pension and medical insurance on their own, with different methods and rates from salaried staff. This tool estimates the salaried-employee 五险一金 structure and is indicative only.
- No. All calculations run locally in your browser — your contribution base and rates are never transmitted to any server or stored. Closing this page clears every input.

City variation is the central caveat. Both the contribution rates AND the base floor/ceiling differ by city and are updated every year when the local average wage (社平工资) is published. The built-in Beijing / Shanghai / Guangzhou / Shenzhen presets are typical, approximate ~2024 values for orientation — pick "Custom" for your own figures and verify before relying on any number.

Employer-only items. Work-injury (工伤) and maternity (生育) insurance are normally paid entirely by the employer; the work-injury rate is set by industry risk class and maternity varies by city (often merged into medical), so they count toward the employer total only.
