How to use

Search by name

Enter Chinese (朱红), pinyin (zhuhong), English (red), or hex code (FF0000) — all four work.

Filter by cultural category

5 categories: festive, mourning, imperial, nature, philosophical.

Understand the symbolism

Each colour has cultural meaning — e.g. vermillion = festive, white = mourning, yellow = imperial.

Design with the palette

Copy the hex code into Photoshop / Figma / CSS — perfect for China-themed design work.

Chinese Traditional Colors: 5,000 Years of Color Culture

Chinese color philosophy derives from the ancient "Five Colors" (cyan/red/yellow/white/black), corresponding to the Five Elements (wood/fire/earth/metal/water), Five Directions (E/S/center/W/N), and Five Seasons. Each color carries philosophical meaning, political symbolism, and ritual usage. Unlike Western color psychology, Chinese color is fundamentally cultural, political, and ceremonial.

The five cultural categories

(1) Festive colours: vermilion, peach pink — Lunar NY, weddings, celebrations. (2) Mourning colours: white, plain — funerals. (3) Imperial colours: yellow, purple, crimson, gold, silver — exclusive to royalty, forbidden to commoners. (4) Nature colours: cyan, jade green, kingfisher, moon white — scholar refinement, garden aesthetics. (5) Philosophical colours: mystic black, unadorned, black — Daoist simplicity, Zen spaces.

The Forbidden City pedigree

The 2020 book "Chinese Traditional Colors: The Aesthetics of the Forbidden City" by Guo Hao and Li Jianming is the modern definitive study. This tool\'s hex codes draw from that work and from textile/painting historical research.

Application in design

Designers working on China-themed projects (Lunar NY illustrations, film posters, restaurant interiors, web design) can use this tool: (1) Primary palette: 1-2 cultural colors (e.g. vermilion + gold); (2) Avoid wrong pairings (e.g. white at weddings = mourning, faux pas); (3) Seasonal alignment: cyan for spring, red for summer, yellow for autumn, black for winter.

Data based on public-domain traditional color literature. Hex codes are digital approximations — the actual depth of silk and textile colors cannot be fully reproduced on screen.

10 Facts about Chinese Colors

01

The "Five Colors" (cyan/red/yellow/white/black) originate from the Rites of Zhou (~6th c. BCE), aligning with the Five Elements and Five Directions. The foundation of all Chinese color theory.

02

Yellow was imperial-only from the Sui-Tang dynasties onward — wearing yellow as a commoner was a capital offence until the Qing dynasty. The modern phrase "黄袍加身" (donning the yellow robe = becoming emperor) derives from this.

03

White = mourning is one of the biggest cultural differences from Western. Western: white wedding dress = purity; Traditional Chinese: white clothing = funeral. Chinese traditional weddings never use white.

04

Vermilion (朱红, #E60026) is the iconic "China Red" — the dominant color in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Lunar NY Gala, and films like Zhang Yimou's Hero.

05

Forbidden City colors: yellow glazed tile roofs (imperial), vermilion walls (auspicious), green eaves (lucky grass), grey-blue ground tiles. A masterful combination of Five Colors + imperial colors.

06

"Dai" (黛, #4A4266) was the ancient blue-black eyebrow pigment, so "黛眉" became poetic for feminine elegance. The character Lin Daiyu in Dream of Red Chamber, and the phrase "dark tile, white wall" come from this.

07

"Sky-cyan" (天青色) — the color of sky after rain — was Song Emperor Huizong's favorite (1082-1135). Ru-kiln porcelain in this color is called "the finest porcelain under heaven".

08

"Mystic Black" (玄) is the color of Daoist "mystery of mysteries". The Dao De Jing's opening chapter calls it "玄之又玄,众妙之门" — "the mystery of mysteries is the gate of all marvels". The most enigmatic color in Chinese philosophy.

09

Singapore's flag uses vermilion + white. The red echoes Chinese tradition; the white represents purity and equality. A symbol of Singapore's multicultural color heritage.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Digital approximations. Chinese traditional colors derive from plant dyes, mineral pigments, and silk fabrics — none of which can be fully captured in RGB pixels. The hex codes follow the 2020 "Chinese Traditional Colors" book and modern design consensus.

  • Yes, but cautiously. Avoid: all-white at a Chinese wedding (offensive), pure-black for Chinese festive events (inauspicious), pure-grey for Chinese imperial themes (disrespectful). Recommended: use modern greys/pastels as neutral backgrounds with Chinese colors as primary.

  • Zhang Yimou's films are masterclass uses of Chinese traditional colors — Hero (vermilion/black/white), House of Flying Daggers (bamboo green/blue/white), Raise the Red Lantern (red/black). Modern Chinese cinema draws heavily from this palette.

  • 24 main colors — the core of Chinese traditional palettes. The complete Chinese color spectrum has 300+ entries, but the core 24 covers 90% of design scenarios.

  • Books: "Chinese Traditional Colors: The Aesthetics of the Forbidden City" (Guo Hao + Li Jianming, 2020). Sites: colors.ichongqing.info, china-colors.com. Apps: "Chinese Traditional Colors" app. This tool is a simplified entry-point.

  • The "Purple Star" (紫微星, Polaris) is the Emperor's star in Chinese astronomy. From Emperor Wu of Han onward, purple became imperial. The Forbidden City's name (紫禁城) means "Purple Forbidden City" — "purple" for the celestial Polaris, "forbidden" for the commoner-excluded zone.

  • Yes! Drop the hex codes directly into CSS. Recommended: 1 primary color (vermilion or yellow) + 1-2 accents (gold, ink black) + 1 background (moon white or unadorned).

  • (1) Lunar NY: red decorations, gold-embossed couplets. (2) Weddings: vermilion robes, peach-pink invitations. (3) Funerals: white eulogies, black mourning attire (modern addition). (4) New car blessing: red ribbon on the car. (5) Buddhism: purple ritual objects, gold Buddha statues.

  • Substantial. Real silk and brocade have 3D reflection, sheen, and fiber texture. Screens can only approximate. This is why Forbidden City exhibits must be seen in person to truly experience Chinese colors.

  • Open scholarship: "Chinese Traditional Colors: The Aesthetics of the Forbidden City" (2020) + historical textile/painting research + cultural consensus. Hex codes are digital approximations differing from real silk.
