How to use

Read the clue, guess first

The card shows a 字謎面 (riddle clue) — usually a glyph that hints at one character through dismantling, association, or pictographs. Try to assemble the character in your head before peeking.

Type it, or take a hint

Type the character and tap "Check"; Simplified or Traditional both count. Stuck? "Hint" names the move this riddle uses without giving the answer. "Reveal answer" shows the character and how the clue builds it.

Move between riddles

Use Previous / Next to step through. "Today's riddle" takes you back to the day's pick, which changes at 00:00 Singapore time. Or type a number and tap "Go".

Character Riddles: A Thousand-Year Word Game Hidden in the Glyphs

The Chinese character riddle — 字謎 (zìmí), also called 猜字謎 or 拆字謎 — is one of China's oldest and most distinctive word games. Its whole premise rests on a property of Chinese writing: each character is a square, modular structure that can be taken apart into radicals and components and reassembled. A riddle describes the relationship between those parts in a single phrase and challenges you to rebuild the original glyph. Take 「一口咬掉牛尾巴」 ("one mouth bites off the ox's tail"): start with 牛 (ox), remove the trailing vertical stroke (its "tail"), set a 口 (mouth) beneath it, and you get 告. The clue has to be true to the glyph, read smoothly, and ideally paint a little picture — that triple constraint is exactly what makes a good 字謎 satisfying. This tool holds 63 riddles with a clear answer, each with its working shown.

The three classic techniques

Riddles across the centuries fall into roughly three families. The first is dismantling (離合) — splitting a character into parts and describing how they join or part, as in 「王先生白小姐坐在石頭上」 ("Mr Wang and Miss Bai sit on a stone"): 王 and 白 on top of 石 build 碧. The second is semantic association (會意) — pointing at the answer through meaning or common sense, as in 「七十二小時」 (72 hours = 3 days = three 日 stacked into 晶), or 「九十九」 (100 minus 1 = 白, since 百 minus 一 is 白). The third is pictographic description (象形) — sketching the shape of the glyph, as in 「畫時圓,寫時方,冬時短,夏時長」 ("round when drawn, square when written, short in winter, long in summer"), which describes 日: the sun is round, the written character is square, daylight is short in winter and long in summer. The best riddles braid all three together, which is what keeps them rewarding to crack.

Why riddles have endured across the Chinese world

The riddle's vitality comes straight from the writing system. Alphabetic scripts can barely play this "take-apart-and-rebuild" game, whereas every Chinese character is a decomposable structure naturally suited to becoming a puzzle. At traditional festivals — above all the Lantern Festival (元宵) — guessing lantern riddles is a broad popular pastime, and character riddles are the most ingenious sub-genre. Today, in the Chinese communities of Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia, 字謎 remain alive in language classes, family gatherings and club events — sharpening the eye and serving as an excellent route into character structure, radicals, and etymology. This tool deliberately keeps each clue in its original Chinese (a 字謎 only works on the glyphs) while giving English readers a literal gloss of the clue plus an explanation of the answer, so the "glyph magic" can be enjoyed across languages.

"A riddle turns its words about, so as to bewilder. Some work on the written character; others picture a thing." — Liu Xie, Wenxin Diaolong, 5th–6th century

Where these riddles came from

The deck was put together by hand for this tool in June 2026 from riddles in general circulation, and no book was recorded at the time; the easier clues simply name a character's parts in a sentence. Short riddles like these rarely have a known author. In November 2026 we solved every one again: we cut 10 whose answer did not follow or was not the only fit (add one stroke to 木 and you could have 本, 未, 末, 禾 or 术), corrected the explanations, and checked the parts claimed for 54 riddles against cjkvi-ids, a public character-decomposition dataset. Thirteen clues match the academic CC-Riddle dataset word for word, with the same answer; that dataset does not allow commercial use, so we used it only to check and took no riddle from it. Four riddles work in one script only, and the page says so. Character riddles are a word game and predict nothing. Whatever you type is checked in your browser and goes nowhere.

The gate frame takes a different character inside each time

01

The 門 (gate) is a universal frame: 人 inside → 閃, 日 → 間, 口 → 問, 馬 → 闖 — one frame, different fillers, different answers.

02

The Shishuo Xinyu records Yang Xiu solving eight characters on the back of the Cao E stele, 黃絹幼婦,外孫齏臼: yellow silk is coloured thread, 絕; a young wife is a young woman, 妙; a daughter's son is 女 + 子, 好; a spice mortar takes in the bitter, 辤. Together: 絕妙好辭, "superb writing".

03

止戈為武, "stopping weapons makes valour", comes from the Zuo Zhuan and is a moral saying rather than an account of how the character was formed — and not a riddle, since the clue states its own answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A character riddle is a guessing game whose answer is a single Chinese character. It exploits the modular, separable structure of the glyph: one phrase (the clue) describes a character's parts and how they join, and you work backward to the whole. E.g. 「一口咬掉牛尾巴」: drop the tail of 牛 and add 口 beneath → 告.

  • 63, each with its working shown. There were more until we re-solved all of them in November 2026 and cut 10 whose answer did not follow or was not the only fit. Where they came from is covered above.

  • It steps through the whole deck by the date in Singapore, changing at 00:00 there. Every reader gets the same riddle on the same day, and none repeats until all of them have appeared.

  • A clue often circulates in several versions, and some have more than one workable answer. We kept only riddles whose answer can be reached step by step from the clue, and each explanation shows the steps. If yours can be reached the same way, it may be another version, or something we missed.

  • The interface supports English, but the clues must stay in Chinese — the dismantling mechanic only works on the glyphs, and translating would break the answer. In English mode each clue gets a literal gloss beneath it, plus an English explanation on reveal, so non-native readers can still enjoy and learn.

  • Not exactly. 燈謎 (lantern riddles) is the umbrella term for riddles written on lanterns at the Lantern Festival, whose answers can be characters, words, idioms, names or places. 字謎 specifically means riddles whose answer is a single character solved by dismantling — the most ingenious sub-genre. This tool focuses on character riddles.

Method & sources

How it computes

A deck of 63 single-character riddles (CharacterRiddlesKernel). A riddle stays only if its answer follows from the clue by a stated move, no other everyday character fits equally well, and nothing in the answer comes from outside the clue. Today's riddle walks the deck by the Singapore date with a step coprime to its length, so none repeats until all have appeared. Riddles are a word game; nothing here predicts anything.

What this tool implements

  • Provenance as far as it can be stated: the deck was written by hand for this tool in June 2026 from riddles in general circulation, and no book was recorded then, so none can be named now. The easier clues simply name a character's parts in a sentence.
  • Checked 2026-11-03: every riddle solved by hand; the parts claimed for 54 riddles (51 distinct answers) tested against the cjkvi-ids decomposition, none unsupported; 13 clues match a clue in CC-Riddle word for word and all 13 give the same answer. CC-Riddle is CC BY-NC-SA, so it was used only as a check and nothing was taken from it.
  • Cut 2026-11-03 (73 to 63): 木字加一筆, 日字加一筆 and 口字加兩筆 have several answers; 言來互相尊重, 人人都說好, 少了一半還是水 and 雨落山頭 give an answer the clue does not reach; 三人成, 三日為 and 三金成 are fragments that recite the answer's recipe.
  • Corrected 2026-11-03: 半青半紫 took the wrong halves of 青 and 紫 (it is the top of 青 and the bottom of 紫); 雙木非林 gave no reason for 目 (木 and 目 are both read mù); 一夜又一夜 called 夕 a short form of 夜; the page said 80-plus riddles. Clues are now shown in Simplified or Traditional; four work in one script only and say so. "Random riddle" never changed within a day and is now named Today's riddle.
