Turnitin's detector is the campus default and has kept pace with new models and humanizer tools. Turnitin says false positives stay under 1 per cent on documents with over 20 per cent AI writing, but buys that by under-reporting, and one independent study found it identified only 55 per cent of disguised AI content.
It is not included in every Turnitin licence, there is no public price, and universities including Curtin and Southampton have stepped away. Use a score to start a conversation, never as proof, as Turnitin itself advises.
What we found
Turnitin's AI writing detection is the incumbent on campus, so the question is less whether it exists than how far its own claims can be trusted. Turnitin says it keeps the false-positive rate under 1 per cent for documents with more than 20 per cent AI writing. To protect that figure it trades recall: by its own account a document scored at 50 per cent AI could contain as much as 65 per cent, and scores from 1 to 19 per cent are shown only as an asterisk.
Independent evidence is thinner than the marketing suggests. In a 2024 study by Perkins and colleagues, Turnitin flagged 91 per cent of 22 GPT-4 submissions written to evade detection but identified only 54.8 per cent of their content as AI. The widely cited Stanford study showing detectors misclassifying non-native English writing did not test Turnitin, although earlier versions of this page said it did; Turnitin's own test of English-learner samples found no significant bias, a vendor result. Several accuracy and pricing figures this page previously quoted could not be traced and have been removed.
The product has kept moving. Detection covers named models up to GPT-5.4, Gemini 3.1 Pro preview and Claude Sonnet 4.6, plus AI paraphrasers and, since August 2025, humanizer tools in English. It reads long-form prose of 300 to 30,000 words in English, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Dutch, German and Turkish, and results appear inside the Similarity Report, reaching Canvas, Moodle and Blackboard through it.
It is not part of every Turnitin licence. Detection requires Turnitin Originality, or an add-on for iThenticate 2.0, and Turnitin Clarity, its writing-process product, is a separate paid add-on. No price is published.
Some institutions have stepped back. Curtin University switched detection off across its campuses from January 2026, and Southampton is leaving Turnitin after a proposed licence change on training AI with student work. Turnitin itself says a score should never be the sole basis for action.
