Cortex AI is the natural way for Snowflake customers to use AI on their data: models are called from SQL or through agents without data leaving the platform, the model catalogue is broad, and the new CoWork and CoCo agents bring it to business users and developers. The billing model needs watching — AI Credits plus warehouse compute for the SQL agents generate — and several products were renamed in 2026, so older guides are out of date. Strongly worth enabling for existing Snowflake customers; not a reason on its own to move data into Snowflake.
What we found
Snowflake Cortex AI brings language models and AI services inside the Snowflake data cloud, so data does not have to leave the platform. Cortex AI Functions, formerly Cortex AISQL, let analysts call models from SQL to complete, classify, summarise, translate, extract, embed and transcribe text and audio, and the catalogue includes models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI, Meta, Moonshot, Zhipu, Qwen and Snowflake's own Arctic family. Cortex Search provides retrieval over company data, and Cortex Agents orchestrate models and tools, including MCP connectors to services such as Jira, GitHub and Salesforce; Snowflake now recommends them over the older Cortex Analyst text-to-SQL API. Snowflake CoWork, formerly Snowflake Intelligence, is a work agent for business users that has worked in Microsoft Teams and Copilot since November 2025, and Snowflake CoCo, formerly Cortex Code, is a coding agent. A managed MCP server lets outside platforms such as Anthropic, Salesforce Agentforce and UiPath reach Snowflake data, and an AI Gateway is in preview.
Snowflake introduced Cortex in November 2023. It says more than 9,100 customers use its AI products every week, and its customer stories include Booking.com and Penske. Snowflake runs in AWS's Singapore, Jakarta, Malaysia and Thailand regions and in Azure Singapore.
AI is billed in a separate AI Credit, introduced in 2026, at $2 per credit on demand with global routing or $2.20 regional, falling to $1.88 under large capacity contracts. Models consume credits per million tokens, from a few hundredths of a credit for small models to tens of credits for the largest, and Cortex Search charges 6.3 credits per gigabyte of indexed data a month; running the SQL that agents generate also uses ordinary warehouse compute. Transcription prices were cut by up to 60% in June 2026. A 30-day trial includes $400 of credits, but AI features stay off until a credit card is added, and the CoCo command-line tool has its own trial and then costs $20 a month.
Independent reviews are scarce. It suits Snowflake customers who want AI on their data without moving it.
