Gemini Notebook remains one of the most useful free research tools: it answers from your own sources with citations, and its Audio and Video Overviews, slide decks, quizzes and flashcards make study material easier to absorb. The rename brought code execution in a secure cloud computer, sync with the Gemini app and purchased Play Books titles as sources.
The downsides are opacity and bundling. Since September usage is a compute budget that refreshes every five hours under a weekly cap, so it is hard to know in advance how much you can generate, and higher limits come only inside Google AI plans priced for much more than notebooks. Workspace and Education accounts get stronger data protections than personal accounts.
What we found
Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on 16 July 2026. Google's announcement calls it the same standalone product, now synced with notebooks created in the Gemini app and due to appear in AI Mode in Search; old notebooklm.google.com links now redirect to notebook.google.com. It began as Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2023, and Google says more than 30 million people and 600,000 organisations use it.
The core idea is unchanged: answers come from the sources you upload, with citations back to the passages used. Around that sits a growing Studio panel. Audio Overviews turn sources into a two-host Deep Dive, a single-voice Brief under two minutes, a Critique or a Debate. Video Overviews come in Explainer, Short and Cinematic formats, Cinematic in English only. Slide decks, infographics, mind maps, reports, data tables, flashcards and quizzes round it out. Deep Research, added in November 2025, gathers cited web sources into a notebook.
The changes since the rename matter more than the name. Notebooks gained a secure cloud computer that writes and runs code for data analysis, first for Ultra and Workspace business customers. In late August, Expert Intelligence let users add Google Play Books titles they have bought, from more than 100,000 books. In September, Google announced live voice conversations with notebooks in the mobile app, an audio recorder for lectures, and roughly one-minute Short Video Overviews in more than 80 languages.
Usage limits also changed. Since 2 September, fixed daily counts such as three Audio Overviews a day have given way to a compute budget that weighs prompt complexity, chat length, source count and features, refreshes every five hours and sits under a weekly limit. Google AI Plus doubles it, Pro quadruples it and Ultra multiplies Pro by five or twenty. On Google's Singapore page, Plus costs S$6.98 a month and Pro S$28.99; slide decks download as PDF, not PowerPoint.
