Mendable was a capable early AI docs-search product, but its team has moved on to Firecrawl: new sign-ups are disabled, nothing has shipped since 2024 and its supporting infrastructure is disappearing. Its free plan cannot be taken up. Not a product to adopt now; existing users should plan a migration, and new buyers should look at actively maintained documentation-search tools.
What we found
Mendable was an AI search and chat product for technical documentation: companies connected their docs, websites, Notion, Zendesk or Google Drive, and Mendable answered developers' and customers' questions with cited answers through embeddable components and an API, with analytics on what users asked. It was the first product of the team that went on to build Firecrawl, the web-scraping and web-data API, and the company now trades mainly as Firecrawl.
Mendable is no longer open to new customers. Its sign-in page states that new sign-ups are disabled and that only existing users can log in, its changelog and blog stopped in early 2024, its JavaScript package has not been updated since April 2024, and its app and trust-centre domains no longer resolve. Its GitHub organisation now reads "Mendable AI is now Firecrawl", and Firecrawl's own announcements describe Mendable in the past tense. We found no formal end-of-life notice, and we could not establish whether existing customers are still served or billed.
Both products come from SideGuide Technologies, Inc., which went through Y Combinator's summer 2022 batch and is based in San Francisco; its co-founders are Caleb Peffer, Eric Ciarla and Nicolas Silberstein Camara. Firecrawl raised a $14.5 million Series A led by Nexus Venture Partners in August 2025 and a $75 million Series B led by Smash Capital in September 2026, and says it has more than 1.5 million users. Mendable's site listed MongoDB and Snap among its customers.
Mendable's pricing page still advertises a free plan with message credits — quoted as both 500 and 300 on the same page — and custom Enterprise plans with white-label components, fine-tuning, bring-your-own-key, SSO and an SLA, but the free plan cannot be taken up, and only the Enterprise contact route remains.
Teams looking for AI search over their documentation should evaluate actively maintained alternatives; Firecrawl itself serves the web-data side of the same problem.
