Doubao MarsCode 豆包MarsCode
ByteDance's coding assistant, rebranded Trae since 2025
Overview
Doubao MarsCode was ByteDance's free AI coding assistant and cloud IDE on the Doubao model; since 2025 the brand folded into Trae, ByteDance's broader AI-IDE family, with 'MarsCode' now referring to the legacy VS Code/JetBrains plugin and cloud IDE inside that lineup.

The stub description of MarsCode as a standalone free assistant is out of date: ByteDance rebranded the whole line to Trae through 2025, restructuring it into a desktop IDE (Trae), a plugin for VS Code/JetBrains (the old MarsCode assistant, now under the Trae umbrella), and MarsCode Cloud IDE, all sharing one account. Trae has since added a Builder/SOLO mode for end-to-end automated development and switched, in February 2026, from per-request to token-based billing with several paid tiers alongside a genuinely free plan. That's a fast-moving, well-funded product with real technical chops — ByteDance's separate Doubao-Seed-Code model hit state-of-the-art SWE-Bench Verified scores comparable to Claude Sonnet, and the company open-sourced a Trae Agent CLI tool that's picked up 11.8k GitHub stars. Worth using, but bookmark trae.cn now, not marscode.cn — the standalone brand and its old domain are effectively gone.
What people say
Doubao MarsCode launched in June 2024 as ByteDance's first push into AI coding tools for Chinese developers, offering code completion, unit-test generation, bug fixing across 100+ languages, and both a VS Code/JetBrains plugin and a browser-based cloud IDE — free for domestic developers from day one. In February 2025 it added DeepSeek integration, letting users switch between Doubao and DeepSeek-R1/V3 models mid-session, and ByteDance separately launched an international sibling, Trae, in January 2025 through its Singapore subsidiary Spring (SG) Pte Ltd, bundling GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet for free.
Through 2025 the two product lines converged. The MarsCode brand was folded into Trae: the current structure is a standalone desktop IDE (Trae) plus a Trae plugin — the rebranded MarsCode programming assistant, still installable in VS Code and JetBrains — plus MarsCode Cloud IDE, all sharing one login. Visiting marscode.cn today redirects straight to Trae's own site. Feature development continued under the Trae name: Builder mode landed in VS Code in April 2025 and JetBrains IDEs the following month, and a full SOLO mode — automating requirement-to-deployment workflows — shipped in November 2025.
Independent reviews from that period (Slashdot, Futurepedia, and developer write-ups) described the underlying tool positively: one full-stack developer highlighted its one-click cloud-function deployment and automatic metadata handling, a front-end developer called the run-preview and integrated console "incredibly smooth." Common criticism was a learning curve for the AI-specific features and a hard dependency on a stable connection since most compute runs in ByteDance's cloud.
Pricing has shifted since the free-only days. As of mid-2026, trae.cn lists a genuinely free tier plus paid "Speed" tiers (¥59, ¥239 and ¥699/month, plus a limited-time ¥1,399 Express tier) that mainly buy priority queue access and higher concurrency rather than gated features — base functionality stays free. Separately, in a November 2025 promotion, ByteDance's newer Doubao-Seed-Code coding model launched at 9.9 yuan (about US$1.30) for the first month, 40 yuan standard, marketed around state-of-the-art SWE-Bench Verified results comparable to Claude Sonnet. ByteDance also open-sourced Trae Agent, a separate CLI-based coding agent, on GitHub — it has drawn 11.8k stars, evidence the underlying engineering has real outside credibility beyond marketing copy.
