BloombergGPT is worth understanding as a research artifact, not a product to evaluate. Bloomberg trained a 50-billion-parameter model from scratch in 2023 on its proprietary FINPILE corpus, published a widely-cited paper about it, and never shipped it as a usable tool -- no API, no download, no Terminal function named after it. Wayne Barlow, Bloomberg's Global Head of Terminal Products, said outright in 2026 that BloombergGPT 'was a research model and is actually not used at all in any of our products.' That advantage didn't hold. Commentary through 2025 and 2026 has been blunt: general models improved fast enough that a static, never-updated 2023 checkpoint stopped being competitive for most financial-text tasks, and multiple writeups note that trying to actually access or test BloombergGPT -- via API, download, or public demo -- goes nowhere, because none of those were ever released.
