  Your sun sign — the “star sign” most people mean — is set by where the sun appeared along the zodiac on the day you were born. • What are the twelve zodiac signs and their dates?+
  In order they are Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19), Taurus (Apr 20–May 20), Gemini (May 21–Jun 20), Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22), Leo (Jul 23–Aug 22), Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22), Libra (Sep 23–Oct 22), Scorpio (Oct 23–Nov 21), Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21), Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19), Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18) and Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20). The exact boundary can shift by a day in some years.
• What are the four elements?+
  The twelve signs are grouped into four classical elements. Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius; Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn; Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; and Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Signs of the same element are traditionally said to share temperamental traits.
• What does it mean to be “on the cusp”?+
  If you are born within a day or two of the boundary between two signs, you are said to be “on the cusp” and may feel you identify with both. Because the precise moment the sun changes signs varies slightly from year to year, people born right on a boundary sometimes get different answers from different sources.
• Is the zodiac sign the same as a horoscope?+
  Your zodiac sign is your sun sign; a horoscope is an astrological forecast based on it (and sometimes on the positions of other planets). This tool simply identifies your sun sign and its traditional characteristics — it does not generate predictive horoscopes, which are a separate astrological practice.
• Where does the zodiac come from?+
  The twelve-sign zodiac has its roots in ancient Babylonian astronomy over two thousand years ago, later developed by the Greeks. The word “zodiac” derives from a Greek term meaning “circle of animals”, reflecting that most of the signs are represented by living creatures. It is one of the oldest continuously used symbolic systems.
• Is astrology the same as astronomy?+
  No. Astronomy is the science of celestial objects, while astrology is the tradition of interpreting human affairs through the positions of the sun, moon and planets. This calculator deals only with the well-defined calendar dates of the sun signs; the meaning attached to them is cultural tradition rather than science.
• Why do some sources give slightly different dates?+
  Because the sun does not cross into a new sign at the same instant every year, the boundary dates can vary by a day. Most published date ranges are a convenient standard, which is what this calculator uses. For a birthday that falls exactly on a boundary, an astrologer would check the precise time and year.
