The years-months-days breakdown is computed the way you would intuitively count it: full years first, then full months, then the leftover days, borrowing from the previous month whenever a subtraction would go negative. Because that borrowing uses the actual length of the relevant month, the result is exact rather than an approximation based on a fixed 30-day month. The total-days figure, meanwhile, is read straight off the calendar, so every leap day between the two dates is automatically included — which is why the day and week totals are reliable even across decades.

The calendar breakdown keeps the leftover days separate, while the total-months figure counts only whole months and quietly drops those extra days. A gap of two years, three months and twenty days is the same as twenty-seven whole months plus twenty days; neither is wrong, they are just different lenses on the same span.
