Measuring the Gap Between Two Lives

How much older is one partner than the other? What is the exact gap between two siblings? These are questions that sound simple until you try to answer them precisely, because calendars are awkward — months have different lengths and leap years sneak in an extra day. This calculator does the bookkeeping for you. Enter two dates of birth and it returns the exact difference in years, months and days, along with the total in days, weeks and months, and tells you which person is older. You can add optional names so the result reads naturally, and the order you enter the dates in makes no difference to the answer.

The years-months-days breakdown is computed the way you would intuitively count it: full years first, then full months, then the leftover days, borrowing from the previous month whenever a subtraction would go negative. Because that borrowing uses the actual length of the relevant month, the result is exact rather than an approximation based on a fixed 30-day month. The total-days figure, meanwhile, is read straight off the calendar, so every leap day between the two dates is automatically included — which is why the day and week totals are reliable even across decades.

It is worth understanding why the two ways of expressing the gap can look different. The calendar breakdown keeps the leftover days separate, while the total-months figure counts only whole months and quietly drops those extra days. A gap of two years, three months and twenty days is the same as twenty-seven whole months plus twenty days; neither is wrong, they are just different lenses on the same span. One satisfying property falls out of all this: the difference between two people’s ages is fixed the moment the younger one is born and never changes, because both age at exactly the same rate. Though the tool is framed around birthdays, it works equally well for any two dates — anniversaries, historical events, project milestones. As with every RECATOOLS calculator, all the arithmetic runs in your browser, so the dates you enter never leave your device.

The gap between two people’s ages is set at birth and never changes — only each person’s own age moves.

10 Facts About Age Gaps

01

The gap is measured in calendar years, months and days.

02

Month lengths vary, so the “days” part borrows correctly.

03

Leap years are handled automatically in the day total.

04

A “total months” figure ignores the leftover days.

05

Two people’s gap stays constant — it never changes.

06

The order of the two dates doesn’t matter.

07

Couples often quote their age gap in years and months.

08

Genealogists track exact gaps between siblings.

09

A week is exactly seven days, so weeks = days ÷ 7.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You enter two dates of birth and it computes the exact gap between them. It expresses the difference both as a calendar breakdown — years, months and days — and as raw totals of days, weeks and months, then tells you which person is older. The order you enter the dates in does not matter.
  • It counts full years between the dates, then full months, then the remaining days, borrowing correctly when a month or day would go negative. Because months have different lengths, the “days” portion is worked out from the actual previous month, so the breakdown is exact rather than approximate.
  • Yes. The total-days figure is computed from the actual calendar, so any 29 February days between the two dates are included automatically. This makes the day and week totals precise even across multiple leap years.
  • The total-months figure counts whole months only and discards the leftover days, while the breakdown keeps those days separate. So a gap of 2 years, 3 months and 20 days shows as 27 total months — the 20 days are not rounded up. They are simply two different ways of expressing the same gap.
  • No. The calculator always measures from the earlier date to the later one, so you get the same positive difference whichever way round you enter them. It then tells you which of the two people is older based on their dates.
  • Absolutely. Although it is framed around two people’s birthdays, it works for any two dates — the time between two events, an anniversary span, how long ago something happened, or the gap between historical dates. Just enter the two dates you want to compare.
  • Because both people age at the same rate, the difference between their ages is fixed at birth and stays the same forever. If one sibling is exactly two years and ten days older than another, that remains true on every future birthday. Only each person’s individual age changes over time.
  • No. Everything happens in your browser using ordinary date arithmetic. The dates you enter are never transmitted, logged or stored, so the tool is private and works offline once the page has loaded.
  • Yes. There are optional name fields so the result can say, for example, “Maya is older” instead of “Person 1 is older”. The names are only used to phrase the result on your screen and are not stored anywhere.
  • Completely free, with no account or limit. It works offline once the page has loaded and collects no data — your dates never leave your device.
