Why Your Fertile Window Is Six Days, Not One

Ask most people when conception is possible and you will hear a single date — day 14, give or take. The number is so familiar that it has stopped sounding like a claim. It is one, and for most women it is wrong, in ways that matter if you are actually trying to use it.

The best evidence on the question comes from a prospective study that followed women trying to conceive and identified the day of ovulation in each cycle directly, rather than assuming it. What it found was a fertile window six days long: the five days before ovulation, plus the day of ovulation itself. The width comes almost entirely from sperm, which can survive in the reproductive tract for up to five days waiting for an egg. The egg itself is viable for well under a day. That asymmetry is why the window sits entirely before and on the estimated day and does not continue afterwards — a detail that surprises people who assume fertility tapers off either side of ovulation like a bell curve.

The same study is the source of the figure that should retire the day-14 rule. The familiar clinical shorthand — fertile days 10 to 17 — described the whole fertile window in only about 30% of women. On days 12 and 13, the days most often labelled peak fertility, 54% of women were in their window, which means nearly half were not. And women who described their own cycles as regular still had somewhere between a 1% and 6% probability of being fertile on the very day their next period was due. There is no day the calendar can mark as free of risk.

Counting from the right end of the cycle

If ovulation is not on a fixed day, what is it fixed to? The better anchor is the luteal phase — the stretch from ovulation to the start of the next period — because it varies less than the follicular phase that precedes it. That is why this calculator counts backwards from your expected next period rather than forwards from your last one. For a 28-day cycle the two approaches agree. For a 34-day cycle they do not, and only one of them is right.

Being honest about this cuts both ways, though. A 2024 study that followed 53 healthy women for around a year found the luteal phase is not fixed at 13 to 14 days either: variance of roughly four days between women, about three days within a single woman, and 55% of them had at least one cycle where it ran shorter than 10 days. So the luteal phase is the better anchor, not a reliable one. A calculator that takes a steadier-but-still-variable quantity and reports a single calendar date has thrown away the uncertainty rather than measured it.

What this tool does differently, and what it does not

Worth saying plainly: at the default 14-day luteal phase, the central estimate here is the same date most other calculators will give you. We checked that across cycles of 22, 28, 34 and 40 days and it matched every time. Anyone claiming a better number for a typical user is overselling.

What differs is the treatment. The headline is the six-day window rather than a date. The luteal phase is an input instead of a hidden constant, which is the one place the arithmetic genuinely moves — three days for a woman with an 11-day luteal phase, who is precisely the person a hard-coded calculator serves worst. If you supply your shortest and longest recent cycles, the window widens to cover your own variability instead of pretending it away. The page tells you whether the days 10-to-17 rule fits you, rather than quoting the 30% at you and leaving you to guess. And where the inputs fall outside what can honestly be estimated — a cycle under 21 days or over 45, a luteal phase outside 9 to 17 — it refuses and says why, because a confident number there would discourage the conversation with a clinician that the situation actually calls for.

One more thing it does not do: keep anything. There is no cycle history, no stored dates, no account, and no analytics on what you type. The calculation happens in your browser and then it is gone. Reproductive-health data is about as sensitive as it gets, and the most reliable way to protect it is not to collect it in the first place.
