The I Ching's 64 hexagrams follow a fixed sequence whose logic has been debated for two thousand years. What has been settled, though few introductions mention it, is a strict structural rule that governs the entire order. You can verify it yourself, by hand, in about ten minutes.
The rule
Take any odd-numbered hexagram and the one after it. Turn the first upside down — not flipping the lines from solid to broken, but physically rotating the whole figure so the bottom line becomes the top. In almost every case, what you get is the next hexagram in the sequence.
Hexagram 3 and hexagram 4 are the standard demonstration. So are 7 and 8, 11 and 12, 63 and 64. The pairing is not occasional. It runs the length of the received order.
The exceptions are more interesting. Some hexagrams look the same upside down — they are symmetric under that rotation, so turning them over gives you the figure you started with and cannot give you a partner. For those, the sequence uses a different relationship: the partner is the hexagram with every line inverted, solid for broken and broken for solid.
How many of each
A hexagram is six lines, each either solid or broken, so there are 2 to the sixth power, or 64 of them. Reading a figure upside down reverses the order of its six lines, which means a hexagram is symmetric under inversion exactly when its line sequence reads the same in both directions.
Count those and there are eight. The all-solid and all-broken figures are two of them; the others are the six-line arrangements that happen to be palindromes. That leaves 56 hexagrams that do have a distinct upside-down twin, which is 28 pairs. The remaining eight are matched by inversion of every line, giving four more pairs.
The 28 inversion pairs and 4 complement pairs make 32 pairs in total, accounting for all 64 hexagrams with none left over. The received order covers every figure, exactly once, under one of two rules.
The eight symmetric figures are the ones to watch for, because they are where the pattern appears to break and does not. Two of them are easy to name: the hexagram of six solid lines and the hexagram of six broken lines both read the same upside down. The other six are the arrangements that happen to be palindromes, and each of them is paired with its own line-by-line opposite rather than with a rotation. If you are walking the sequence and find a pair that does not invert, check whether the first of the two is symmetric before concluding anything is wrong.
Why this is worth knowing rather than just tidy
This rule is more than a curiosity; it is a practical tool. Traditional practice makes constant use of related hexagrams — the one you get by turning a figure over, the one you get by inverting its lines — and knowing that the numbered order already encodes the first relationship means you can move between related figures without a lookup table. If you have hexagram 43, its inversion is 44, and you did not need to consult anything to know that.
It also lets you check any edition or app for errors, including our own hexagram lookup. Walk the sequence and confirm the pairing holds. Where it appears not to, you have either found a symmetric hexagram, which is one of eight, or a mistake in the text you are reading.
What is actually unsolved
The pairing rule explains how the hexagrams are grouped, but not the order of those groups. That is the part that has resisted explanation.
Why does the sequence open where it does, and why does one pair follow another? There is a traditional commentary, the 序卦傳, that offers a reading in which each hexagram leads to the next by meaning, and it is old and worth reading on its own terms. It is generally read as a later interpretation of the order, not an account of its creation. Numerous mathematical schemes have been proposed. None has been accepted as the explanation.
Chinese scholarship has a phrase for problems in this category, 千古疑謎, riddles of the ages, and the sequence of the 64 is one of the standard examples.
That the order is not the only order
The received sequence is usually called the King Wen order, and it is not the oldest arrangement that survives. A manuscript written on silk, recovered from a tomb at Mawangdui sealed in 168 BCE, presents all 64 hexagrams in a completely different scheme, along with variant names for some of them and textual differences in the line statements. Other historical arrangements are recorded too, including one organised on five-phase principles.
The canonical numbering, then, is just one of several historical arrangements, which makes the question of its logic more interesting, not less. An unexplained order is not evidence of hidden meaning; it is evidence of a text whose editorial history is only partly known.
Where this comes from, and what will date
The pairing rule and the counts above are arithmetic on six-line figures and can be checked directly: eight hexagrams are symmetric under inversion, giving 28 inversion pairs and 4 complement pairs, 32 in total. Nothing about that can change.
The historical material is a different kind of claim. The Mawangdui manuscript and its date are well established, but the details of how it arranges the hexagrams are best taken from a scholarly translation rather than a summary, and secondary accounts of that arrangement do not always agree with each other. We have deliberately not printed a sequence for it here.
One thing this guide does not do. It says nothing about what any hexagram means or what consulting them is for. The structure described here is a property of a text, and it is checkable whatever you think the text is for.
